    Trying to combo better

I'm trying to get better at comboing songs, and I know I need to practice but I don't know what difficulty to practice. Should I practice songs I can already combo pretty well, slightly harder than that, or songs that I can barely survive?

This is one of the reasons why a practice mode you can't fail, but gain no credits for gets suggested every so often. Since the best way to improve is to play above your skill level, you're prone to a lot of fails dropping your scores and averages down in the process.

Your best bet is to just slowly inch up the difficulty of the songs you do. Don't wait to get great at a certain difficulty to move up, as soon as you're passably good, move up a little more. Struggly your way up as high as you can, and then when you go back to where you were before, it will go from being decently easy to downright easy.
