no, the key in bemani games is never memorization, it's pattern recognition. Memorization is just an after effect of playing a song a whole bunch, and even then, you only really memorize the beats, and not which key/pad is actually being hit.
We don't really memorize arrows, ok you might have a better idea of when to press arrows in a song once you've played it many times. But if we played it with our eyes closed we would definatly still fail.
And if you have beaten a song you have never been able to beat before... yes, you are better, I guarentee it. When I was new I could never beat FF7 then I finally beat it... then again after a few tries, and then it wasn't a problem anymore, etc, for different songs too. So yes, you are indeed getting better.
Nah, it's just practice. When new songs come out, say a level 8, people can FC it their first try just beause they're able to interprete the arrows. Give it a week or two then you'll be a whole lot farther then you thought was possible originally.
When I started I was like "WTF? BTC is like impossible, how could anyone pass that" and now I'm second on For FFR and can get 150+ combos on revolutionary.
personally, i see arrows in groups of four usually and sometimes two, three, or seven. When I see a right, then down, then up, then left arrow, i dont read each one alone. I see them together as a common pattern. If youre a really good bemani player like Reach or Volkov, you may even see larger patterns (I dont know)
It is easily possible to memorize songs, I have memorized a bunch or crap on stepmania (ie, i can do it just as well blinfolder/with the mointor off, as I can reading the arrows)
