whats the m for in the upper right-ish area of the screen, you know, where you pick the dirrectional flow of the arrows

The M is for Multiplayer. That is what's selected if someone is playing in multiplayer mode.

And if you can't play a game in single player, you might want to check if the "M" is high-lighted. And also, just for advice, if you want to switch between those modes up there and it wont let you, just refresh the page. I have this problem often.
