What do the red arrows mean?

I noticed that the more challenging songs have red arrows in them along with the blue arrows. What do these mean and why are they only on some songs?

        I believed you, Tosh.

Most of the older songs have all blue arrows not because they are all off-beat notes, but because Synthlight just didn't feel like making the arrows different colors based on the beat back then. Don't ask me why he didn't choose red, however, nor why there are pink arrows in Balloon Fever.

Well. .it's really a quarter note, or yeah, a 4th note.

i think that pink is really supposed to be purple, or 12th note. Synth posted about how some people couldn't see the arrows, so he made them a (much) lighter color. It would be strange/impossible to have 32nd notes when the game runs at c200, and if they needed to, they could just speed the tempo. Example: NeoMax.

                  ...

What on earth is a 12th note? I have heard of quarter, 8th, 16th, and 32th notes but not 12th...

... Do you understand how notes work. The number on bottom is the number of notes it takes to fill the amount of measures of the number on top. A 1/4 note means that it would take 4 (1/4) of these notes to fill 1 (1/4) measure. So a 1/12 note takes 12, evenly spaced notes to fill one measure.

super-smashman's description is pretty accurate, but you have to remember, it's slightly different from sheet music. In FFR and StepMania, the colors mark the beat. For instance, if there were a bunch of notes, all 1/8th apart, it would alternate from red to blue. This is because the red are the constant 1/4th beats and blue is on the 1/8th beat. However, in sheet music, a bunch of 1/8th notes strung together are all the symbol for 1/8th notes.

As for Balloon Fever.. I don't even know what the hell XD I'll look at it sometime. My guess is it rests on an off beat. Like I mentioned earlier, since the colors mark the beat, if the arrows all correspond to things in the music some weird amout from what is considered to be the song's beat, you'll get some weird color. If the stuff in the music you're stepping to is all 1/12th apart from a constant bass drum playing a constant 1/4th beat, for example, all of the arrows will be a weird color, probably purple or something.

What the flip, yo. The tempo never changes in NeoMAX, and there are no 32nd notes, either. The arrows just turned red because whoever was doing the colors got lazy XD
