i know this mite be dumb to ask people who have been here, but how do you get a character?

by character... do you mean a face in ffr? or an avatar on the forums?

getting a face in ffr is very simple. there is a bar at the bottom that say "characters" then a list of button to the right. when you get the face you like, click the button. thats it.
