    Key Configuration

    Hi guys and girls.

I used to be in to this game a while back when I was younger and I just started getting back into it. For some reason I have a vague memory of not using the default control setup, like so:

    w
    a s d
But instead using a straight line configuration like so:

    a s d f

I can see pros and cons to both layouts but my question to you all is: Is it worth learning? Is it all just personal preference? I would like to hear your opinions. And hey, maybe some tips to!

    Re: Key Configuration

Generally, here at FFR, we use the full two-hand method. Let me explain:

Take your hand and lie it flat on the table in front of you. In the next ten seconds, make as many taps as possible (only using two portions of your hand). You'll find that it's easiest if you alternate between your thumb and your pinky. Also, if you were to use two hands to complete the test, you could make far more taps than you could with one hand.

That being said, it's most efficient to use a configuration in which each pinky and each thumb have their own key. Since your hands can be rather large in comparison to your keyboard, I often use two keyboards; one for each hand. On the left keyboard, my pinky hits tab and my thumb hits space, while on the right keyboard my thumb hits space and my pinky hits enter.

It does ultimately come down to personal preference, but it has been scientifically proven (and the community agrees) that this is the most effective FFR method.

Just gonna say I can make far more taps per second with my index and middle than with my thumb and pinkie. That may just be a result of me training those two fingers more than my others, but I know in piano they suggest you trill with your thumb and ring finger. The pinkie is pretty useless unless you're drinking tea or something.

I've never heard of anyone playing spread with their thumbs and pinkies.

@OP: Play spread with your index and middle.

WASD sucks because whatever fingers you use for W and S get in the way of each other
it really only matters if you're trying to play hard charts
