From the annals of FFR lore and forum science: it was named after the first player who ever achieved complete perfection on an entire song. AnotherAloneAnon. Everyone on the forums shortened it back then for convenience to "AAA", and after a while it just stuck I guess. Things seem to happen that way sometimes, you don't want to know about how 3rd Style came about.

Haven't heard this before -- interesting if true. Seems a little arbitrary though. Seems more likely to just be an extension of the standard grading scale.

I believe First Mix had SS representing a perfect score.

Pretty confident he is making stuff up. Seeing as how AAA is from DDR and FFR just took the concept.

I misread what he said and thought he was talking about the original DDR or something (i.e. why they switched from SS to AAA scale). I'm way too tired right now and will probably call myself an idiot for not rightfully calling that out as obviously untrue.

I may be wrong about this but I believe the "rank 1 = AAA" metric was put into effect way back during the avmiss days.

There were a few songs like Caprice, 100 Bar Blackout, RunnyMorning, FF7 Battle Theme, GGC, Crowdpleaser, Chrono Trigger, Molto Vivace, One Minute Waltz, Party 4U, Nova Pulser, etc (I may have missed a few here) -- which had 0/1/2-framers, meaning that meant you couldn't physically get all Perfects under that bugged engine.

So it was sort of annoying that some songs weren't "AAAable" just because of framers. Rank 1 = AAA "fixed" the issue. Most songs had at least a couple people who had achieved all Perfects anyway, and so the two metrics were pretty much identical in most cases. The only difference is that now you could get the best possible score (e.g. 3 greats on Caprice) and have that denoted as AAA.

I'm surprised it hasn't been switched back to "All Perfects = AAA" though, especially since framers have been fixed for years.

AAA might also have been defined as the highest possible score on a song. A quick peek at the Death Piano levelranks shows that rank 1 is not defined as an AAA for the purposes of that page (highest is Dossar's 8-0-0-1).

I guess we'll never know for sure without a time machine.
