    ct

i love ct, i really do...
    having thought provoking discussions and
thinking about things from a different perspective
    can be quite enjoyable

especially on those rare occasions when...
    i discover something about myself,
i realize that something is or isnt important to me,
i further develop my opinion on the subject,
or i discover more about the kind of person i am
and the kind of person i want to be.

    But usually...
my ct discussions tend to be dead ends...
and by that i mean a lot of the same points come up,
a lot of the same arguments are made,
    the issue is not resolved,
    progress is not even made,
    people still have their opinions.

this tends to give my brain "enlightenment blue balls"
metaphorically the engine is running but the car is not going anywhere...

    in other cases
the discussion leads to the conclusion that
a lot of things in life are f'ed up
and there might not be anything we can do about it

but then again, progress may not be the purpose of ct.
    if not, then what is?

to try to justify the way one thinks?
to fulfill a desire to be accepted?
    to propagate one's opinion?
    to express frustrations?
to have a topic of conversation?

    is ct philosophy?
is ct a subset of philosophy?
is philosophy a subset of ct?

i might edit this later but im posting now to get some thought juices flowing

    Re: ct

CT is a bunch of intellectuals looking for a fight or a friend.
    Honestly, that's all it is.

If it wasn't, then it would just be a list of factual information. Instead we go back and forth on the same topics either arguing or agreeing.
Progress is not impossible, but it's not common (that I've seen).

    I enjoy CT nonetheless.

        Re: ct

I think that one of the primary issues in CT is that people hold their opinions and merely reiterate them time and time again. I don't feel that there's enough factual support in CT threads to create a persuasive argument. I myself am guilty of this.

People need to better utilize facts to present their view points in my opinion.

I don't get where you're going with this. The thread itself seems pointless... In my opinion, in CT we all discuss one topic. It branches off into others, and somebody pulls us back. We try to influence others with our opinion's by putting evidence behind them. In the end, we hope to achieve that goal or for everyone to come to a mutual understanding.

P.S. NFD in CT? It's like a paradox

i find it funny that you did not support the claim that people do not support their claims which therefor supports your claim. paradox lol

im not familiar with that acronym (nfd)
the purpose of this thread is to discuss the purpose of ct in general
and the personal reasons why people like/dislike ct
              such as in this quote

The idea of a CT section is great, but it's too bad that it's too heavily restricted.
“Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the 'transcendent' and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish... Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you.”

I know it's necessary to a point. But I believe that's been crossed and it's now compromising potentially great debates.
