There's a lot of discussion on teh 1n732w3bz that the apocalypse is going to somehow beckon the end of humankind in 2012. I think this is about as possible as every human being alive having sex within the next year.
The Mayans had a calender that extended to 2012, and it's prophetic that once the calender "expires" the planet will follow. Now, I'm not one for astrology, prophecy and archaeological history, but I am one for detecting complete and utter bull****.
The calender is very archaic, hundreds of years ago. Yet, the Mayans did not predict anything more. They drew a perpetual calender (you can find these in encyclopedias, that also stop at particular dates, all of which are meaningless) to forecast planting and harvesting seasons, climate patterns, etc...
Yes, the calender is immensely complex. I do not believe a longer perpetual calender has ever been drawn.
Now, I highly doubt that this civilization heard "the word of God", or any other signal that the world will end.
Frankly, if something does happen, it will be by great coincidence. Expect to live the next day.
