    Entertainment

Something I said in the Super Bowl thread got me thinking. I'll quote it now, just so you guys know where I'm coming from in case you didn't read it.

    TheRaiRaiEatsBallons says:

There's nothing amazing about football. No matter how talented any of the players, teams, strategists, etc. are, they're wasting it on a massively pointless and wasteful event which consists entirely of burly guys in tights jumping on each other.
And you're wasting your own time watching and caring about it.
    Laharl says:

Funniest thing I've heard all day.

The vast amount of money spent in the United States is over various forms of entertainment. Last I checked, the two largest industries in the U.S. were Porno and Video Games (with Movies not too far behind, IIRC). Football, or any other sport, is a form of entertainment. Watching people displaying physical skills to win an event has been one of the greatest forms of entertainment since the BEGINNING OF HUMAN EXISTANCE.

I could argue that spending money on DDR is a waste of time. It's not like you get anything out of it other than a score on the screen, and the slight amount of physical excersize that's required. Why is your form of entertainment greater than my form of entertainment? The sense of comeraderie that forms between people cheering for the same team is pretty significant, I say. That's worth something in and of itself.
    Now to my topic here:

Why do we as humans feel the need to criticize and dishonor other forms of entertainment? It's like we put down how other people have fun to validate that the way we play is better than anyone else, making us superior as human beings.

I'm of the standpoint that everyone is different. The whole saying "Different strokes for different folks" definately applies to what I'm saying. If someone else has fun in a way that I don't, and it's not a destructive form of entertainment (ex: lynching people, setting things on fire, etc.), then go ahead and enjoy yourselves.

I have pretty broad interests in entertainment myself. I like to play video games, I like to listen to music, I like movies, I like theater, I like sports. *shrugs* There's things in each of those worthwhile to pursue, I think.

    RE: Entertainment

We criticize forms of entertainment becuase some of us humans dont enjoy certain "types" of entertainment.
Football may just be the most loved, or most hated sport and thats why rairai said that. He simply doesnt like football so he criticizes.
its just natural instinct i guess.

      RE: Entertainment

It's natural to just not be that entertained by it, but to go off and bitch about it with wholly unsupported claims is by no means natural.

In this case, I believe it's a sense of elitism. A person sees many people getting worked up over something he sees as pointless or useless, so he feels the need to prove to them how much they're wasting their time in his point of view.

          RE: Entertainment

People get a kick out of making fun of anything, not just entertainment, that they hate(studies have been done). It's human nature, though; everyone does it, whether or not you realize it(not that it makes it right, of course, but the first step to anything is to admit it). Some people are probably more inclined to bash anything they don't like, though.

Then again, DDR dosent take tax money to make stadiums for, but anyways, I feel that arguing aobut entertainment is jsut a part of human nature. It is human nature to argue, and try to be better then fellow humans.

I bet most stadiums that are built with tax money generate enourmous amounts of revenue for their city, which in turn would give the city more money for other projects. Yet again, it's a win on every side.
