RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Afraid of death.

This is getting off topic but I would like to say that science is refered to in the Bible. They aren't two contradicting things. Job 26:7 shows how the earth is "suspended on nothing" and that idea was way way before science could prove it. So while you can't explain some things now through science, there are things the Bible 'explained' or referred to before science ever did.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Afraid of death.

I was just thinking about this tonight =(

I realized I don't have a lot of time, and if I am a reincarnated person, I don't remember anything from my past life so why would I be in a new life after I die. I'll just be a pile of bones underground in 75 years, and that's depressing. I don't want to die, i'm afraid of dying, because if there was a Heaven it would be like a second Earth x2034284 the population.

To take the Bible as ANY measure of a scientific text is just wrong. The fact that Job 26:7 makes a general statement that can be interpreted to mean there isn't anything holding it up doesn't mean anything. Psychics are right about their clients far more often than the Bible is on scientific matters; if you take a hundred shots in pitch black, you're bound to hit a target with one.

Like chicken nicely surmised, one can easily be religious and scientific at the same time (Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, MANY others...), but when you try to apply religion to science or vice versa, you just fail, mainly because religion is all about constructs. You can't ever prove or test constructs, so the two entities live nicely, pretty much in blissful ignorance of each other.

As for the afterlife, nobody has any idea what really happens, but Pascal's wager is more than enough for me to strive to get into heaven.

Death isn't anything to be afraid of. You know it's there, and you know it will soon one day be your time to join those long past our time whether there's a Heaven and Hell or not. It could just be that mankind hopes for a life after death. Therefore, making a religion.

Not fearing death... just doesn't make sense.

Why would you fear anything more than death?

To be afraid of death just doesnt make sense. Death is nothing more than another form of life, whether you believe in God or not. If there is a God then you start a new life in Heaven, Hell or in Reincarnation. If you dont believe in God then you start a new life 6 feet under the ground.

Im not afraid of Death, im one of the believers that earth IS Hell, in the Bible it says God threw Satan down to earth, so why WOULDNT i think this is hell?

Also, way to jump to conclusions; I never suggested that was the only reason for my beliefs. 'You' isn't a passive noun, either.

Death is another form of life? No offense, but I've never heard anything more stupid and that's no fault on my end.

...you think earth is hell? Oh yeah, God created hell in 6 days and rested on the 7th. Earth doesn't fit the description for hell either. Fiery pain and anguish for eternity? Well... then God created Adam and Eve for the sole purpose of sitting around in hell... and what exactly is the punishment for being bad before you die? Going to hell? Oh wait... that doesn't quite work out does it?

Pascal's wager is still flawed up to the ying yang. I would disregard it completely. It's illogical.

And if earth is hell...well...hell rocks.

Not only that, that's illogical yet again. I thought hell was suposed to be ...the absolute of all evil and eternal punishment even though I don't believe in hell. You could find much greater hells in this universe. Go land on venus. Hell, step out into the vaccuum of space. Pass through the event horizon. Earth is an amazingly beautiful and heavenly place compared to...most places in the universe. The earth isn't perfect, but it is hospitable and breeds life.

I wouldn't call death another form of life, but a part of it. The end of life. I don't think it should be feared because fearing something that is inevitable is kind of silly. It's just something that has to be accepted.

Reach is the only one making a shred of sense in this topic.

I've thought of death for the past while as if you are anaesthetised, permanently. If you've ever been under anaesthetic you'd know that you don't feel the passage of time, you don't dream, nothing happens. Thats how I imagine death, its not a bad thing, you're not alive to experience it. Life on Earth kicks so much ass though, so its not a big deal. If I get in my 80 or 90 so years of enjoyment from it I think I got a good deal.

                              Consider this:

Don't define your existence in terms of life and death. They're overused and heavily connotable words.

Instead, define it in terms of consciousness or unconsciousness. Death would basically just be an infinitely long period of unconsciousness then. (note, death != unconsciousness, state of death ∈ states of unconsciousness).

Everything inside of you is still functioning when you're unconscious XD Death is when everything in your body no longer functions. Infinite unconsciousness would be like a coma.
