If the universe is always expanding. What is it expanding into?

Void. Just because you can't concieve void doesn't mean it isn't truth. There are many inconcievable things that are present in this reality.

EDIT: But I am no scientist so I cannot explain how this works.

It's expanding into itself. The universe, by definition, is everything. So, once you pass the oldest stars and objects, you get into empty space which is still Є the universe (please, bear with the symbol; it was the best I could find).

So, when someone says that the universe is expanding, they're actually just talking about all the matter that is pushing further and further into the universe.

That's just a theory, food for thought, if you will. I don't, nor does anyone of whom I know, necessarily believe this.

But where does all that matter that is constantly expanding go?
Where did the space onto which it is expanding to come from in the first place?
And what if it is a finite space and it will eventually just stop?
I think that the universe is just still going from the explosion of the Big Bang and that it hasn't even
come across the point where it is anywheres near when it will stop.
I hope that makes as much sense to you guys as it did to me

Think of the universe as a stretchy ball. Easier?

It's hard to concieve that the universe has been around forever. And it's hard to concieve that God exists. It's hard to concieve that it expands into void. Something has to be assumed. Humans can't concieve forever in the future, or forever into the past. These are things we cannot explain? But what are you going to do about it...

Actually, one highly technical way to think of the universe expanding is this: the matter of the universe is not expanding; space itself is stretching. Void is becoming bigger because the fabric itself is expanding over time.

Another note... tasuke brought up expanding matter. I think EVERYONE can clearly say that matter is neither created nor destroyed. So, no new matter is being created in our universe.

What is happening is that the solar systems and galaxies that are the furthest apart are continuing to move farther apart from each other. So the galaxies are getting farther and farther apart, meaning there is now more empty space between them, and obviously, less empty void on the outskirts. It is unknown if the outskirts extend infinitely.

There was another topic similar to this, in which i recommended a book for anyone interested in the expanding universe and big bang theory. I'll give it again: Faster than the speed of light by Joao Magueijo.

So technicly the Universe isn't "Creating, or Destroying" matter, according to the Law of Conservations... So it is just stretching the bonds? 0.o Just a thought?

Which also bring in to the question, What is black mater? This "Fabric" that the Universe is stretching to advance farther into the way?

Anyways, Hello there, My first post. I gota go make a signiture and a avatar. -.-'

Questions about infinity are always tough to "answer," but I enjoy trying anyway.

As Drac said earlier, one of the theories I have heard is that "expanding" can be read as "stretching." For example, if one part of the universe stopped expanding (We'll use a human as an example) then that matter would "see" the rest of the universe expanding. However, since everything is expanding proportionally, it's not noticeable to our eyes.

I'm not sure where to go from that, but I thought it was an interesting point to look at. There ARE many views on exactly what the universe is. For all we know, it may be a massive black hole that's part of a much larger mass.

Just putting in my thoughts on the matter.

I have wondered at times about the universe, but until some aliens like the Borg come along or something...I could really care less.

the universe itself is ran by God. it is only expanding in our knowledge. This question in and of itself is a technical mishap and a glitch to your mind. Believe it or not, God is real, and if you dont believe, then you arent ready for the consequences that will be readied for you later.

Religion has no say in this manner, please do not bring it into it.

I just heard something about this manner and completely forgot about it. Oh well, somebody else probably said it anyway. I just wanted to post the above line.

I heard a scientist say once that the universe is stretching and that in millions of years it will just rip open unless the gaint guy clips his finger nail that our universe is on then we will die sooner. just a thought
