    Humanity's one unifying factor

After eons of evolution, the progress to the "civilized" world we live in today, why is it that we can't get along as a species? We're all driven by our own personal desires, goals that some of us would step on others to get.

Let's face it, humanity is selfish, short-sighted, and an environmental disaster.

But what links us together? While other animals unite and work together, humans would rather not. In fact, the only time we ever work with each other is when a war breaks out.

Our lust for personal gain is only bested by our lust to destroy each other in order to acheive these goals. The only thing that brings us together as a species is killing each other.

Why is it that a species given the opportunity to think and develop can only destroy?

      RE: Humanity

yup. lets screw it all.... literally. we should have one giant naked utopian society. but, we'd have to kill off all the fat/ugly/stupid people, so we'd only have to look upon hot sexy people. oh yea... kill all other men. that would be sweet....

perhaps i should go back to sleep so i can go back to my favorite place... Tassopia... yes... where all the girls are 14 and sex crazed and there are no other men.

but, uh.... whatever jazz... its mans competitive nature that leads to all of those issues. the strive and desire to have more than the others combined with Darwinian selection. i love our world. <3

or, we could be like Carlin... "what?!? they have bigger d-cks??? BOMB THEM!!!!"

                Read the fine print, plz.

If you read The Lord of the Flies he personafies society as a whole into an island of children.
                It's a good book.

It's a good book aside from the naked little boys.

I didn't need to read about that.

But Simon being a druggie made up for it.
I watched clouds awobbly from the floor o' that kayak. Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies, an' tho' a cloud's shape nor hue nor size don't stay the same, it's still a cloud an' so is a soul. Who can say where the cloud's blowed from or who the soul'll be 'morrow? Only Sonmi the east an' the west an' the compass an' the atlas, yay, only the atlas o' clouds.

                      ZOMG, TASS IZ TEH DUM!!!!11!

Anywho, yes society is screwed, that's my excuse for running around naked in the streets raping children.

Come on, man, get into reality. We're morally unjust! Compared to what, the colonialists? Puritans? If you ask me, times change. If the economy can adapt, so can we. As long as I'm not dead, I'll live with it. What else do we have to do?

I'm happy with my personal gain. Of course, if you look at the world, it's been filled with western ideas of capitalism and expansion. China turned this down in the 1300s(?) for more traditional ideas. They eventually adopted Communism rather than follow the capitalist ways of western society. We know how they turned out (rather well).

So, the environment sucks. Give me statistics. Giving environmentalist the well deserved taste or reality they've been avoiding is my specialty.

Why do you think they kept passing around that conch? Sure as hell wasn't to make noise.

Simon just happened to have a very low tolerance.

No, Simon was normal. He was the most innocent of them all, though. That was his allegory. The fact that the boar's head was speaking to him was the sudden shock of him losing all that innocence.

The conch was order and justice. Ralph is democracy. Jack is communism through totalitarian government.

Really, the only thing I can think of that would unite the World is if we were to go to war with Aliens...but even then there would be traders.

And Simon did a lot of LSD and the killed him for it.

Oh for Christ's sake, Simon was epyleptic (I can't spell it right, but that's how it sounds.)

                              Also, I'm not a pessimist, I'm a skeptic.

And you've missed my point. What I'm saying is that throughout our history, we've only come together and worked together to do harm on each other. Examples: British colonization of Africa/Middle east, The American civil war, both World Wars and what they were even started over (Hitler invaded Poland was was killing Jews, Yugoslavia was invaded/did invade Bosnia-Hertzagovia (I'm not too sharp on what started WW1, but my point remains it was to impose personal gain and harm others))

Everywhere we look throughout history we've worked together only to kill ourselves or impose our beliefs on another culture. In fact, what defines us as a species is our War mongering. It's the basis of everything we've become, everything we came from.

Why is it that we don't make global decisions with the greater good of the world in mind, and solely that? Why is it that we can't do something without knowing we have something to gain from helping?

I'm talking not about small goals like "I want to be a writer" or "I'm going to buy a sandwich tomorrow", I'm talking about things like "I'm want to help solve world hunger knowing I will get nothing in return but gratification, and I expect nothing in return for my actions".

What I'm saying is we can't commit any selfless acts any more. Maybe as individuals we can be considerate and helpful, but you're the kind of people that will never get into power because you'll be considered "too weak" to rule or make any important decisions.

And finally, look at our reckless regard to the environment. We don't use sustainable development, we are just mining resources like it's unlimited and saying "others will solve it". Eventually we're going to run out of oil, polute the air so much everyone will be contracting serious health problems, and greenhouse gases will be so rampant that we could potentially melt the caps or have another ice age.

The only thing I see happening is mother nature taking a can of whoop-ass out and going insane with random disasters, until eventually, when enough of us have died, we will learn from our mistakes, change for awhile, and then return to our usual stupidity.

Sorry for being like this, but I really think we're too stupid to save ourselves. And it's because we'd rather rule each other then work with each other.
