Ouch. Still on the subject of personal put-downs, are we? Come on, I know that you're intelligent, and I know that you could be better than that. Besides, I never stated that, and I don't think I ever will.

Would you like to hear my take on how great it would be to have faith? Because I think that truly having faith in something like God is probably so much better than the confusion and questioning that I go through every day. I used to have this blind faith once, but my mind began to mature, and that began a chain reaction of questioning that led to the demise of this faith. If there was some way that I could truly believe in something like that again, I would do it. But I can't have faith in something unless I knkow that it's as true as I'm going to get. If I suddenly decided to just 'believe,' it would be like me telling you to actually 'believe,' without a doubt, that malevolent cheese is controlling the world. Unless there's something wrong with you, you won't implement that into your list of 'Things I Believe In With All My Heart.'

Overall, theists are probably much happier on average than atheists.

This, I didn't know. I decided to come back just to see if anything had changed here, and it hadn't. Seeing 15 topics that all basically say that those that follow religion are retards and atheists are superior made the satirist inside me post.

I understand what it is like for neo, i have gone through that and still am. I dont know what is and what isnt and its frustrating when people try to tell you what is and what isnt when they too dont know the answers. The answers they hold can be seen as the answers some one else held because when the original question was asked an answer had to be given. We all look at greek mythology and we say, "The reason that religion failed/died is because it only served to explain naturally recurring events that at first glance seems supernatural. i mean why do the seasons change? is it because of the earth orbits the sun and when our planet is furthest away fom the sun we experience winter? Of course thats not the answer they came up with, how could they? So obviously since winter did occur, it must have been the work of some diety. Wallah! Thats how a religion gets started and until some one comes along and proves thats untrue it will be the accepted answer.
Now am I argueing that because thats how i look at it and that you are stupid for believing the original answer? No im not. For even though god doesnt blow cold air at us therefore causing winter I do believe he exists.
Why do I believe he exists? its because I had a spiritual experience therefore giving me faith in god however I understand that others cannot just believe because of the experience I had.
Lets look at it this way. 3x + 2y = 18
Your teacher says, "X is 4 and y is 3!"
Are you going to just assume that is the only answer? I mean the teacher's answer satisfies our curiosity, why come up with a different answer? I mean why go with 4 and 3 when I could go with 2 and 6? They are both good answers? Which one will I choose?

I agree with you in full, NEO. I actually went to a Christian school for the majority of my education, and they expected each student to blindly accept God, as you said. But as I began to age and mature, I enquired their judgment, and their reasoning made less and less sense until I finally stopped blindly accepting their teachings. I did, of course, keep respecting the religion and I still believe there is some formless deity, but I stopped following their religious agenda, and that was an important step for me in advancing my level of thinking.

I go to a Catholic school... My parents are Catholic... My friends (for the most part) are Catholic... I am surrounded by this religion, and I feel suffocated by it (no offense to anyone). I don't have much of a choice other than to discuss my beliefs online. I'm sorry if my posts seem arrogant or self-assertive, but everything just seems to come out in full force in my writings. But here, this is the only chance I get to truly state and debate my beliefs.

First of all, my parents would go nuts if they found out that I'm an Atheist. Not even my reasoning could begin to explain my situation to them, because I know they won't listen. It is people like the ones I was brought up around that make me want to steriotype all Catholics as close-minded and pushy about what they believe, but I know this isn't true. It so happens that one of my best friends is a very devout Catholic, but we have discussions about religion all the time, and I enjoy it. It's people like her that make me want to think that all Catholics are this open-minded and respectful. But that's not always true.

Secondly, I don't feel open to discussing my beliefs publicly, sinse my world is surrounded by Catholicism. There are very few people who know me personally that know my secret. Only my best friends know that I'm an Atheist, because those are the people that I know I can trust. Unfortunately, the internet is the only place that I feel totally free to discuss my beliefs. Most of my friends are O.K. with my beliefs, but I still have to water down everything I talk about when it comes to religion. On the internet, I don't have to hold back. I suppose this is why I post so much concerning religion, because I'm deprived of that conversation socailly, even though it is the one thing most on my mind.

If you think I'm here to destroy other's beliefs or inflate my ego, I disagree. I am simply an inquisitive mind, trying to make sense of things. I try to draw my own conclusions and try to find people with different beliefs to discuss my conclusions with. If you don't like it, I'm sorry, but I have freedom of speech.
