So me and Justin were browsing Facebook and came across a simple math problem. It turns out for 90% of people it wasn't so simple. We decided to analyze this math problem and show stupid comments of people who think they know middle school math.

American education at its finest.

that's because math majors are used to people using actual syntax

If this, for some reason, came up in a college level math course there would be parentheses around the multiplication indicating to only multiply that last 1.
PEMDAS becomes useless once you reach the level of math where people actually format things for clarity.

Hahaha I was kidding about that post :3. Math majors use syntax to avoid discrepancies like that poorly written problem. However I will disagree and say that PEMDAS is never useless, especially at the college level. Even though appropriate syntax is used, we still use PEMDAS extensively.

A common example is (-1)^2 = 1 vs. -1^2 = -1. In some cases, we'll run into problems where -1^2 = -1 is needed and (-1)^2 = 1 isn't.

However, most of college mathematics past the calculus sequence is about proving instead of computing. Maybe PEMDAS is not as useful for these classes?

There is no excuse to this. PEMDAS is PEMDAS.

In my experience that would be written as -(1^2) = -1 for clarity as well. Loose negative signs suck.

Looks like I'm the only person here who learnt PEDMAS, not this crazy PEMDAS thing you're all talking about. PEMDAS makes me think you're all talking about candy or something.
