    The future

Every once in a while I come across a juxtaposition like this that reminds me just how truly fucced our world is

...do I sound like an irate old guy yet?

EDIT- to be fair, as qqwref pointed out to me, senators ARE boring. But I watched 3 of the videos anyway just to learn what's going on, and I feel like I'm quite in the minority there
just one of those like "whoa man we're in deeper shit than I thought" moments I felt like sharing...

It really is sad when you see some stupid random video with millions of views, and then you see other videos that should have millions of views, but only have a few thousand at best.

What is the primary age group that uses youtube? I feel like at least 50% of its users are between 10-18. I know youtube is viewed by just about everyone with internet access, but I don't feel like people go to youtube for their news.

      I could be wrong.

          Re: The future

          Hi19: I understand that feeling.

I took a trip a little bit ago to visit an old teacher from high school that was honestly the best teacher I ever had. (He was my video productions teacher by the way and I took 4 classes with him over 3 years.)

I went back to the editing room because he was busy explaining how to add a slide to each video that was required as it was like putting the little header in the top left of all the papers you did for English.

I have never seen so many horrible students who didn't care for that class at all in one room. Not only did 99% of those students already have tattoos, but they ALL had a blatant disregard for this teacher.

Now granted, I was never an enthusiastic student overall, but this just made me go "holy shit what happened in a year and a half." The team that I worked with in my third and fourth classes to get everything done (despite them doing really stupid things like deleting two hours worth of work I did on one video) still were absent from the class. (I was not only doing my third year of video, but I was also TAing and working on the school TV stuff during another class period.)

I'm only 19 and I felt old standing in that room (I graduated at 17 because of my birthday being in the summer.) It saddened me to know that the only reason those students took that class, was because they got to watch videos on Wednesdays, and get a relatively easy A.

PS: Sorry if this got off track a bit, but it seemed kind of relevant.

            Re: The future

I agree. It sucks how uneducated the citizens of the US are when it boils down to politics and government. At this point, it seems that they either are not understanding the issues present in today's society or that they simply do not care.

Also, many people tend to use YouTube as a mean for entertainment. It's more common to see people watch a football game on TV than to turn on the news. Either way, more people should be aware of the government.

              Re: The future

the worst thing about it all is that the issues that most people care about currently are: gay marriage, marijuana legislation reform, increasing regulation of corporations and the energy sector, abortion, how "awful" barack obama is, terrorism, other various "issues" disguised as fear mongering, etc. the videos in the screen shot feature none of these.

perhaps those videos would be more popular if they were about the topics i listed instead. to my knowledge there's nothing wrong with current voting legislation, other than its a heap of shit to begin with.

Oh gosh, I know how you feel (although it seems like this situation is when it gets to the extremes.) I remember back in high school, there would always be those "easy A" classes and you always had two type of people in the class, (1) the type that are genuinely interested in the subject of the course, and (2) the type that are there just to get an easy A. And it's always the people of type (2) that ruin it for the people of type (1). Plus, a lot of people of type (2) are too lazy to give a **** about the class, so their "easy A" ends up turning into a D or F anyways.

Good point. Voting rights doesn't seem like a pressing issue at the time. Perhaps if that sidebar had people talking about the issues you mentioned above, people would be more likely to watch them and perhaps they'll get hooked on a certain spokesperson, senator, etc and their thoughts and they might end up watching their videos that pertain to less interesting topics as well.

                      Re: The future

We live in a world where most people seem to think ten seconds is ten years. Don't tell me you've never waited more than ten seconds for a game/video/etc to start and started wondering if something was wrong.

Combine this with content that the general public is largely uninterested in, and you've got yourself a recipe for a low view count.

On my YouTube channel I have about three dozen videos. With the exception of two early '08 clips I uploaded, all of my videos which have over 20,000 views (only like 4 videos, i'm not that popular) are less than 90 seconds long. Most of my longer videos have anywhere from 100 to 3000 views.

I both agree and disagree with that. News outlets should find the best way to make their content as entertaining as possible (it makes it more popular, duh, no brainer) but they need to be careful not to present it at a 5th grade level.

zomg, tattoos! Gawd I hate those freaks, they don't give a shit about anything, being all...tattooed.
And don't get me ****ing started on formatting...That stuff is serious business. If you don't know how to put a header on your paper right, your paper is garbage and your ideas suck. If you put your name on the top of the front page, you're a failure for sure.

I have a large disdain for learning how to format things properly. I recently read an old essay I wrote for a first year drama class, and all the formatting I learned in highschool apparently was wrong for what they wanted, and I lost marks.

The APA (American Psychological Association) has a whole 300+ page MANUAL on how to format properly. I had to buy it for my degree.

CS papers? Don't be dumb, use a reference program, free from x site. That was it.

Anyways, people don't watch political news even when it pertains to them for a number of reasons, however, the fact that people can freely choose to watch RIP Miley Cyrus, and that their world won't crumble around them if they don't closely follow politics, tells me that we're doing something right. The important thing is that the politicians and leaders follow what's going on around them.
                        Also what izzy said.

I'm more in agreement with Izzy. As much as Youtube wants to be taken seriously ever since Google acquired them, the fact is that the community of those with accounts doesn't see it that way. And in all fairness, the Miley Cyrus video was probably up for a bit longer than those town hall videos. More time online generally means it accumulates more views.

I'm all for them trying to increase awareness of the various issues of this election year, but I really don't think it's going to work.
