TheSaxRunner05, only do one per post! let other people figure it out.

Or put a -spoiler- thing on it. Also explain how to do it, 5-4=1 isn't helpful to the problem.

Also, I assure you all of these are possible.

You just said that 3 = fill 4 up to the rim or something like that. That's a measurement.

As far as the OP goes, you can only

      Fill
      Pour ALL
      Dump

edit: NVM that was sax that said it. Wtf is up with me today..

      Going past what 3 was,

      fill the 4g
pour the 4g to the 9g
      fill the 4g again
pour the 4g to the 9g again
      fill the 4g again
pour the 4g into the 9g as much as possible (3g left in the 4g bucket, and 9g in the 9g)
      dump the 9g bucket
pour the 3g in the 9g bucket
      fill the 4g bucket
pour the 4g into the 9g bucket
      (7g in the 9g bucket)

Re: So You Gots Some Buckets!

        I was gonna say....

And you can only fill the 4 gallon bucket with 4 gallons and you can only fill the 9 gallon bucket with 9 gallons.

You must pour them back and fourth and stuffs to get the different measurements.

Sorry for the confusion, its kinda hard to explain.

5 - 4 = 1 Means Take the 5 gallons and dump it into and empty four gallon jug and 1 is left over, and I don't know how to do spoiler tags =(

Edit:// I just shortened it to make it more readable, paragraph form gets confusing

Explain it by starting with 2 empty buckets.

Re: So You Gots Some Buckets!

Going EVEN FURTHER with this, you can get 2.

              fill the 4g
pour the 4g to the 9g
              fill the 4g again
pour the 4g to the 9g again
              fill the 4g again
pour the 4g into the 9g as much as possible (3g left in the 4g bucket, and 9g in the 9g)
              dump the 9g bucket
pour the 3g in the 9g bucket
              fill the 4g bucket
pour the 4g into the 9g bucket
              (7g in the 9g bucket)
              fill the 4g bucket again
pour the 4g bucket into the 9g bucket as much as it can still hold
              (there will be 2g left in the 4g bucket, and 9, that's 11.) <<-- answer to 11
              dump the 9g bucket
there will only be 2g left now in the 4g bucket.

(you can keep cycling through this to get all them, I'm pretty sure..)

12 gal: Fill the four bucket twice, pour it in to the nine bucket, fill four bucket again.

                ^FFP_D0pey btw

Re: So You Gots Some Buckets!

Edit:// Solved this all earlier, but now I put it into words instead of numbers

                  Step One:
                  Fill 4g

                  Two
                  Dump into 9g

                  Three
Repeat steps 1-2 (8 gallons in 9g bucket)

                  Four
Fill 4g bucket, then dump into 8 gals to the rim
                  (3g left in 4g)

                  Five
Dump the 3g into the 9g, then add 4g (7 gals)

                  Six
Fill the 4gal then dump in into the 7gal, 2gal left over (2 gal)

                  Seven
Empty the buckets, fill the 9g and dump into the 4g (5 gal solution)

                  Eight
Empty the 4g and dump the 5 into it, 1 gal left over (1 gal)

All the 10-13's are self-explanatory from here

I just put my earlier post into words

I solved the 7 one, too. Jsyk. But to be fair, so did Sax.

also, I editted the one from above because I just realized that's 11, not 2. (You have to dump the 9g to get 2g.)

^This. A measuring cup that measures in gallons.

Since it looks like some people already solved the whole thing, I'll just rephrase some stuff.

                          4G - 4 gallon bucket
                          9G - 9 gallon bucket

                          Fill the 9G bucket
                          (0/4) & (9/9)
                          *9 gallons*

                          Fill the 4G bucket
                          (4/4) & (9/9)
                          *13 gallons*

                          Pour out the 9G bucket
                          (4/4) & (0/9)
                          *4 gallons*

Pour the water in 4G bucket into the 9G bucket
                          (0/4) & (4/9)

                          Fill the 4G bucket
                          (4/4) & (4/9)
                          *8 gallons*

Pour the water in the 4G bucket into the 9G bucket
                          (0/4) & (8/9)

                          Fill the 4G bucket

                          Pour out the 9G bucket

                          *3 gallons*

Pour the water in 4G bucket into 9G bucket
                          (0/4) & (3/9)

                          Fill the 4G bucket

                          *11 gallons*

                          *10 gallons*

                          (1/4) & (9/9)

                          Pour out the 9G bucket

Here's my effort to make the solution look as compact as possible.

                            Terminologies:

A: Fill the 4 gallon bucket
B: Fill the 9 gallon bucket
nA: Put n gallons in the 4 gallon bucket
nB: Put n gallons in the 9 gallon bucket
BA: Pour from B to A until A is full or B is empty
AB: Pour from A to B until B is full or A is empty
~A: Empty the 4 gallon bucket
~B: Empty the 9 gallon bucket

                            1G: B - BA - ~A - BA - ~A
                            2G: 1A - B - BA - ~A - BA - ~A
                            3G: 2A - B - BA - ~A - BA - ~A
                            4G: A
                            5G: 1B - A
                            6G: 2B - A
                            7G: 3B - A
                            8G: 4B - A
                            9G: B
                            10G: 1A - B
                            11G: 2A - B
                            12G: 3A - B

Whoa, there's something I seem to be missing, here... We can do this according to the rules??

                                Think of it recursively..
For example, 7G: 3B - A is a solution assuming we already know how to make 3 gallons, which we do.
