i dont underdstand how everything got wiped though. the harddrive appears to be fine seeing as the factory recovery thing is working.

unmountable boot volumes are not always end-alls. I've fixed em before with boot cd's and diagnostic tools. depends on the situation though obvs.Comment

it's definitely not the end-all, but I had no alternative. This problem would have been easily alleviated if I had a drive that would mount -- I still can't figure out why I'm getting an error when mounting any sort of "Mass Storage Device" (flash drives, typically). If I was able to do it, I would have slapped the Linux live boot disc image on my flash drive and everything would be perfectly fine.Comment

Huh. Weird stuff. My hard drive has been making sounds for the past year or so and yet this hasn't happened. I think it's vibrations against the tool-less enclosure.

Aw no I feel for you regarding pictures of your Daughter.
My Daughter is 2.5 now and I've kept all her pictures on the camera SD cards (so I have over 200 of them) on the laptop, a different laptop and on an external hard drive.
