Networking - need help!

So I'm trying to get internet out to my garage. I have a wireless router setup on the first floor of my house. I was wondering if i put another wireless router in my kitchen (room closest to my garage) if i could bounce the connection to the router in the kitchen. Also would it be cheaper to just buy like 300ft of CAT5 cable? Below is a really quick ms paint drawing so you can get an idea of what im trying to do. Any suggestions/input is appreciated.



edit: i cant really move the router that i currently have.. so its kinda gotta stay there.

I've never dealt with connecting a wireless router to a wireless router without using cables. Would you be able to plug in the 2nd router into an ethernet port in the wall that is connected to the first router?

And is the distance between the 2nd router and the garage outside?

I had to do something similar to this... I was trying to get an internet signal out to an RV parked ~150 feet away from a router and I thought I could use another wireless device to pick up the signal. Occasionally it worked but the signal strength was around 10% which, needless to say, is crap.

I eventually had to do like Izzy said... I ran a couple of 100' ethernet cables from the house. You can get them real cheap from The Home Depot, and if they're not long enough you can grab a cord-to-cord connector box for a dollar or so. If you want to protect the cords from the weather, get some PVC pipe from your local plumbing store. It's a bit of a project but IMO it's worth it.

What you want is a repeater. It takes the signals being transmitted to your router, and re-transmits them, basically doing exactly what you're thinking.

I'm not recommending any of these products. I just searched "Repeater" in Newegg and found these articles so you know what to look for. I'm pretty sure you'd loose a bit of speed since the signal will be getting weak twice, so you're getting a weaker replication of an already weak signal but I'm pretty sure it would be easily usable. Could always be fixed with more repeaters although I highly doubt you really have to even worry about that.

I use this guy. You will want to upgrade the firmware (it has a built in update util once on the net) It will do what you need it to. Below is a pic of its "repeater capabilities" It comes stock. I will help you if you need br0. If your laptop isn't already wireless N then you may find yourself upgrading it if the connection is rubbish. Should be fine though 50 ft of air is better than 50 foot of house
