    Computer Problems

My computer gets a file corruption error which is from window system32 config system.

Right now I am linux on the same computer and was wondering if there was a way if I can fix it here. I tried to do it with a windows CD with a usb but my computer always restarts so I can't do that.

    Any help is appreciated.

If the file corruption error suddenly occurred, there is a chance that your hard drive might be failing. Find the name/model of your hard drive and find the manufacturer software to run a SMART test -- this will tell you if the hard drive is still operable.

I assumed he couldn't boot into Windows because he's running on Linux now.

Ok I don't care about this hard drive anymore.

Anyone recommend a laptop hard drive?

The one I have now is Western Digital WD1200BEVS 120 GB if its needed.

I'd agree with halogen that your harddrive might be starting fail. You can always salvage your files and try clean installing windows again to see how long it lasts. Who knows, maybe it was just a random error from the power going out during a windows update.

I just reformatted and I can't even get to the login screen before it freezes.

Another thing I want to ask is does it matter what model laptop you have? Because I don't want to buy a hard drive and find out that it won't fit.

Check your hard drive and see what the connection is (SATA/IDE, etc.) before continuing on. It should say right on the drive, along with the serial number, information, and whatnot.

Also, if you haven't had the drive for all that long, a SMART error might show that the drive is (was) faulty, and you might be able to get a replacement. My WD Scorpio Blue failed after roughly a month and when I did a SMART diagnostics check, it give me an error code that explicitly stated the HD was defective.

EDIT: Yeah, you have a WD drive too. See if you can fill out a RMA on their website. My drive had a three year limited warranty from them - you might still be entitled to a new drive.
