            I work in social media marketing, so I was able to get verified by Twitter (the blue check mark in my profile). It's usually celebrities and brands who get verified. Random people follow me because they think I'm famous. XD

                Twitter peaked I think in early 2010 or something like that and then saw a huge amount of users go inactive. (sound FAMILIAR?! :P )

                The problem was that people didn't understand that twitter can be used as a new medium or a way to follow people who don't want to take up the work of a facebook page. Instead, the most regular twitter users went "OMG so stupid to just update status who wants to just hear what dumb people think? Imma update facebook to say that."
