    bikes vs. jets

USA TODAY delivers current national and local news, sports, entertainment, finance, technology, and more through award-winning journalism, photos, and videos.

in this thread i would like to discuss the viable option of using bicycles as a main mode of transit in american cities. i would like to hear any points a motorist would have for driving a car instead, and i would also like to disprove them.
i also want 2 connect with the other cyclists on this site bcuz 4rm wat i can tell there arent v many.

i have been commuting by bike since i was 17 (2+ yrs,) i have never acquired a driver's license or operated a car (legally, for >20 minutes,) and i dont intend 2. i also live in the unforgiving heat of texas, so it CAN BE DONE. on average, i will be in a car only once every week.

My school is over 40Km away and when traffic is light it takes an hour and 10 minutes to drive there. My work is also a 40 minute drive away in no traffic and starts at 6AM. Please disprove my need for a car. Btw that article's title is REALLY misleading. They were only going 39.45Km/h. I drive in residential zones almost twice as fast as that.

it is apparent 2 me that u have modeled yr lifestyle around car culture. the fact that u go 2 skool/work so far away is proof of that. now b4 i continue, i should note that in OP i say "american cities" cuz frankly i have no idea wat the workings are like in canader.

to make a long point short, you bought a car to get to work, and you go to work to pay for yr car. when u take the car out of the equation, and the ~$800 it costs per month 2 legally operate it, is working where u work sustainable? most likely not at all. infact, it could be incredibly inefficient. b4 u should attempt 2 rationalize biking so far every day, u should first attempt to rationalize working and going to skool so far away from home.

for instance, my commute is like so: 8km ride 2 and from skool, 5km to work and back.
thats 26km total, about 2 hours worth of riding total and i enjoy it enough to tack on another 50km just for the hell of it most days

like i said, the bike life iz rly that of the city, unless u make yr living 4rm doing cross-country fundraising tours or sumthin.

Where I live is very similar to North East America. I live in a sub-urban area an hour away from a metropolitan city. The nearest College is a half hour drive away, and doesn't offer the course I wanted to take. It offers a Java Programming/Networking course and I just want to take an IT course with Networking, databases, server-side scripting, and servers. The nearest school that offers this is the school I go to. Also it's hard to find work in my town due to living next to a city ripe with fresh immigrants which take up a lot of the jobs I'd try and get, and the nearest thing I could get is the job I have now. I also have a speech impediment restricting me from a lot of jobs which involve verbally dealing with the public. I also don't pay $800/mo for my car. I inherited an old piece of crap from my parents which is excellent on gas. I work full time in the summer, 8 hours a day at $15/hr and my car costs me ~$250/mo with gas and insurance. Please tell me what I am doing wrong so I can get rid of my car and use my bike.

look, if u want 2 re-read my first reply u can, but here are the brief facts:
-u live in a suburb. suburbs exist solely because of carz. if not for carz, it would b completely unreasonable and inefficient 2 live in a suburb, w/o cars, suburbs r basically just small towns out in the country.
-if going to that skool is that important 2 u, maybe u should live on campus?
-^same goes for the job, if these things are so0o0o0o0o0o0o0 important, it couldnt hurt 4 u 2 actually live near them.
-$250/mo is still $250/mo. after buying an air pump and screwdrivers/allen wrenches, riding clothes, front and tail lights (which are all things that can be used on the multiple bicycles i have,) i pay $100 for new tires and $35 for a tune up about once a year. your yearly total: ~$3000, mine: ~$135

look, this is the third time im goin 2 say it, u can't live in the suburbs or small towns and bike, unless yr already dedicated 2 it and want to ride 4+ hours a day (i would totally do it)

as 4 wat yr goin 2 skool for, when u do start working in the java/it/networking business, wont u b working either downtown in an office building or at home? if so the bike life would b v applicable in that case.

You're a ****ing troll. Judging by your post history and how you're posting now there's not other explaination. Nobody adds a ****ing 'z' at the end of cars or write "so" like "so0o0o0..." unless they're either bad at trolling or satirically typing like a complete ****ing retard. I honestly think anybody who's reading this message should just ignore this shithead. It's ridiculous enough he wants me to believe he thinks getting rid of a bike when it goes down to -40C (It does that in the U.S. too) with icy roads, or turn your life upside down so you can bike instead of driving a ****ing car.

http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...1&pp=50&page=4 Check out any of his older posts. They're written properly. Obvious troll is obvious. Either that or in the past few months he developed a crippling mental condition.
