According to Google, he died from the same cancer that claimed his eyes (retinoblastoma) to begin with. He developed a tumor in his sinus cavity.

I would say he was in his early 20's late teens if he died in '09. I'm too lazy to google it atm.

There's a documentary on him. The boy that sees without eyes or something like that. I think he's about 14 in the video and died at 16, just a few weeks before his 17th birthday.

I stumbled upon this a few minutes ago, it's rather remarkable that humans can train themselves to do this.

Probably the cancer came back and killed him which is really sad, he sounded like a truly remarkable person.
