Therapeutic Massage

Anyone know anyone who a trained in massaging (any type)? I might take it up since nothing else will fit me and it's a lil late for me to train to play soccer. Just looking for some insight on how rewarding it is.

Won't be able to take classes until (maybe) June; August at the earliest.

I've never done it myself, but there's a massage therapy program at my community college, and once a semester or so the people come in and "practice" on the people in the Student Center.

First thing you're going to want to do is decide what sort of massage you want to study. This is not something to take lightly, as there are a number of techniques for applications such as head-neck-back, deep tissue, or sports medicine.

Once you've done that, start working out. You need the strength to hit where it hurts and the overall stamina to be able to press just as hard on your tenth client of the day as your first, not to mention that you'll be on your feet for most of the workday. (I recall an incident in my EMT class where I wasn't strong enough to splint my partner around the thickest part of his thighs well enough, so I ended up having to splint one of my female classmates instead.)

Finally, since you've got a few months to kill, use this time productively to find out more about the programs in your area. Prerequisites, degree availability, job placement services, necessary materials and credit hour investment are some of the major things you'll want to talk about with a counselor.

I know a couple of people that went to a tech college for massage therapy. They don't have a job. I've received one and I believe he was using his elbow (my friend said it was his weiner), but he dug deep into my muscles and it really hurt. I told myself to man up and not scream or tense up. It was nice experience and I felt better after.
