IMO, I think "the beginning" is not a helpful clue for 39. It's fine for 18, but not 39. If anything, I think it can be a bit misleading.

What makes 39 so hard is that people consider the clues in the wrong order. "The beginning" is something that will make sense only when you've figured out the rest.

That was one thing Zest riddle really had going for it. It definitely had a fantastic atmosphere/artistic flair. By the time you finished, it was not only a victory of logic/puzzle-solving, but you also felt like you had gone through this really creepy, disturbing, mysterious journey.

Have you tried Inwardhellix http://inwardhellix.com/? I daresay it surpasses zest in some aspects. Its art is definitely on par, and maybe even better in some parts. The first 10-20 levels beat zest's hands-down (but frankly the first 12 of zest, up to herstory.txt level, are quite a crapshoot and a really poor introduction to the greatest online riddle).

Some fantastically original stuff in the later half as well.

I agree. Especially levels... blahhh I can't remember. 3 and 8, I think. Level 3 is too abstract for an opening riddle, and even level 8, to this day, I still don't understand the solution for despite having made it all the way through Notpron/Zest/etc. It's a poor opening riddle, unless Karol has changed a bunch of stuff since then (I know he did an art upgrade).

I finished the first 60 (the full circle!). Made it some way into the "sequel" but have since lost the log, and haven't played since then (60 is really amazing, but just the thought of having to go through it one more time puts me off trying again)

edit: well 40's quite the anticlimax :P

stuck on -40 now. Have two different lines (hurrrrr) of thought: one hinted by the picture name, one more instinctive. Neither panning out or making any sense with the title

Not implemented in the public one yet. Code is in place, waiting on level revision now. Once the first 40 levels are set up as best as possible I will swap over to the development version.
