All I know is I've made tons of money when I was in a good situation and didn't need it off poker then as soon as we really needed it because living expenses were just getting to be too much I was on a terrible downswing. You can't rely on it you have to have something solid and if you can make a few extra bucks with the poker great but never rely on it.
oh yeah I had a big downswing and thats when i quit playing on the internet because some of the beats i took i figured it had to be rigged. worst beat i had ever taken. (this was a little under 1000$ pot real money)... i have KK, flop comes 2K3. dude must really put me on AQ cause he gets it in with 7's. turn 7. river 7. anyone that can top that on the list of bad beats i feel for you.

yeah after i post this response i'm about to leave and go see what kind of jobs and such are out there around here. this summer when i turn 21 i'm going to have like 400 dollars set aside and go to the casino and see if i can make some money at it. if i can, great makes money less stressed. if not, too bad and cut my losses there and continue to work.

America really needs to get some sort of a hex system set up (you don't pay for University in Australia until you earn more than 40k/year after you graduate) or hand out more scholarships.

Work a ****load + do some handy man jobs for more pocket money.
Or take two jobs if you can and save up the tax return from the end of the financial year.
      Or work a corner.

      Also, this ^
If you guys have been strong so far with the distance, I'm sure you both can soldier on a little longer. As previously mentioned, you should take baby steps and not do something so drastic as to move in before you've even gotten to know what you both are like in person.

Get a part time job, sell bud, don't smoke any of it. You'll pay your way through college.

UPS is ****. They have policies which seem to have been made in like 1930 when they were made, and are very hung up on stats, which would be fine if they actually measured them accurately. I have never left a job more disgusted than when I worked at UPS. I avoid shipping with their company if I have a choice.

If you can handle it, be a bartender or waiter for quick money. Tips are where its at, and the night/evening shifts won't interfere with school. Find work near where your school is and where your home will be to cut down on transportation and time. Whatever you do, don't own a car. I've seen very smart people freeze because they couldn't afford their winter coat to pay for their car, which was totally, totally, totally NOT needed for them. (They had a tuition-included bus pass, bus drove by their house every 15min, and takes 10min to get to school/work for them.)

If it were me, I'd go to the bank and get a line of credit or a regular student loan. The bank doesn't care if your parents make too much money. 10k isn't all that much money anyways, especially if you've actually been wise enough to go to college for something that will get you a job that pays 50k+ a year.

All the couples I know right now have had to have 1 person alter their career path significantly for the other person, welcome to the real world.

If you're into gambling and are programming savvy, make a poker bot and have it run constantly. I know someone who did that who made around 5k a month, and is now using the same idea to buy and sell stocks. They're a millionaire now.

No insurance on the car? You're a young male driver, rates have to be through the roof! And you haven't had to repair your car yet? I swear, a car is this huge blackhole for money, especially if your life becomes centered around needing to use it, because then you will have to fix it up when it goes to ****.

This is exactly why everyone needs to ride bikes.
(I'm not being sarcastic, I commute on average 9 miles a day, ride 70 on saturdays for the hell of it)

Edit: I just realized that that's how you can easily save money.
Think about the cost difference between a bicycle and a car.
                  Cars:
Gas (about $50/month, depending on distance)
                  Insurance ($100-200/month)
Car Payment ($100-200/month, unless it's paid off.)
                  Maintenance (Tricky to calculate.)

                  Bicycles:
                  Rain gear ($50, once.)
                  Lights ($15, once.)
                  Tire pump ($20, once.)

That's really all I need, I've been commuting by bike for 2 years in DFW, and believe me when I say it's completely possible.
And I don't want to hear your lazy "But it always takes too long!" excuse because I hear that **** all the time and it's just not true if you can just get off your ass.
