Couldn't think of anywhere else to put this.

So, the question is.....does anyone play it?
If so, what rules, where you play (online), etc?


I play Riichi mahjong, on Tenhou, or Janryumon.
I prefer Janryumon probably because I somehow play better on that client, not sure why.

I have my own set at home, and am looking for some people in my area that want to play, got a couple friends from school to join it, now I just have to teach them how to play.


And if you want to learn Riichi or something, there is a great ruleset here.

Uh... I play Windows Mahjongg while I wait on downloads sometimes, but I'm pretty awful at it. My win percent is 12.

I just played some Touhou game that goes with Hong Kong Mahjong's rules..

Actually, i'm pretty much beginner level but i'm starting to understand what i'm doing. If you know a good online site to play together or something i would definitely give it a try.

Also, lol at anime post, there's also Akagi and Saki as well that are Mahjong related animes.

I am 100% sure that Touhou Unreal Mahjong is Riichi rules, since I have it :P

I also wonder if you actually have played real mahjong rather than the stupid "solitare" games.

sjoe is talking about difference between 'real mahjong' and 'puzzle mahjong.'

iirc real mahjong is like poker but much cooler.

Yeah there's typically this "mahjong" that's going around these days that involves picking two of the same tile to remove them from a set pattern stack. That is not the mahjong that sjoe is talking about here.

Real mahjong is (trying to sum as simply as possible) a little bit like playing poker, but with a different form of betting, per se. (Usually) 4 players, with a 13 tile hand, take turns drawing and discarding from the wall (the place where all the non-hand mahjong tiles go) and trying to form a winning hand: a winning hand, at its simplest, consists of 4 sets of 3 tiles, which can either be the same tile (ex. 3-3-3), or consecutive tiles of the same "suit" (ex. 3-4-5) (I don't know what they call them in english but there are dots, lines, and characters), along with an ending pair: 2 + 4(3) = 14, or 1 more tile than your hand (you must win off of a draw or someone else's discard) There are other special hands too that don't always follow this rule.

Depending on what tiles you get you can change the number of points you receive for winning. "Honor tiles"/Special tiles that are usually included in the game include the 4 wind tiles, and 3 other special tiles and may net you some niec points if you get a good hand with them.

If that sounds interesting enough, you can go read more about special hands, "pon"/"chi"/"kan"/"riichi" (those are japanese terms for special mahjong moves), etc. Google's your friend.
