This has some stories about prisons. Apparently, people that only have a high school education are 20 times likely to be imprisoned than someone with a college education (according to this site anyway).

Everyone is affected, but not equally. Black men in their early thirties are imprisoned at seven times the rate of whites in the same age group. Whites with only a high school education get locked up twenty times as often as those with college degrees

the prison systems are doing an amazing job. im so proud of America and how they treat prisoners. nothing should be done because the system is so perfect and everyone in prison is doing well

That shouldn't be surprising. It's not like people end up in prison by chance or randomly. You get locked up for making bad decisions.

As such it also shouldn't be surprising that people with an IQ of 70-90 are also 20 times more likely to have been incarcerated than those in the 120+ range.


It's not like you can play the causal link card here and argue that people are going to jail because they aren't in school. You could easily argue the other way around, that they're stupid anyway and wouldn't have graduated, given their IQ. It's impossible to know (Though it's almost most definitely a combination of being stupid AND not going to school, as it would produce the highest likelihood of getting into trouble).


Anyway - clearly our jails should do a better job of treating people humanely if this is in fact the case. However, don't get this strange idea that people just end up in jail randomly and they're all in the right but those oh so evil cops and jails!!! ...or something.

I suppose I'm Canadian - I know someone that works as a guard at the Jail, and I have been there. I can say pretty soundly that, at least here, the inmates are treated much better than the guards, and the inmates are not good people. They're definitely in there for a reason. Many of them get the **** beaten out of them by the guards on a regular basis but for quite clearly attacking and provoking the guards in the first place. That's just the way many prisoners are. Hell, many of them beat up each other.
