    Earth Hour 2009!

Woah, so, according to google, Earth Hour is today! I almost forgot about it! The following is from google's website:

Earth Hour invites one billion people in more than 2800 cities representing 83 countries to turn off their lights for one hour – tonight, Saturday, March 28 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Paris, Sydney, London, Cairo, New York, Los Angeles and Cape Town, will join together to demonstrate their commitment to energy conservation and sustainability. Here's how you can participate:
    • All you have to do to Vote Earth is turn your lights out for one hour tonight, Saturday, March 28 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm local time, in your city. Your light switch is your vote!
    • Set your computer's power management and save up to $60 on your electricity bill and nearly half a ton of C02 over the next twelve months. Climate Savers Computing Initiative provides instructions on how you can save electricity all year long through efficient computing.
    • Join Earth Connect and share your opinions about climate change through blogs, e-mails, and Twitter. The goal is to gather one billion words to present at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December.
    • If you are affiliated with a college, help your university reduce its environmental impact by adopting green computing practices. Pledge to Power Down for the Planet and create a video to teach others about the importance of energy efficient computing in the fight against climate change.

Earth Hour is about more than dimming lights for sixty minutes; it’s about making a commitment to reduce energy consumption throughout the year. As Google's business grows, we want to make sure we minimize our impact on the Earth's climate through responsible environmental practices every hour, every day.

tl;dr version: You're supposed to turn off your lights/appliances or any electrical things from 8:30 to 9:30 LOCAL time. So that means I'm doing it in one hour.

Is anyone else planning on doing this?

Damn I had forgotten about this too.

I have nothing to do on the computer anymore so I just might. Also yeah it's in an hour for me, too. If you have nothing else to do, I suppose it could help your electricity bill a little, save energy, etc. etc.

EDIT: Also if I recall there was quite a bit of flaming about Earth Hour a while back.

You've been hanging around the wrong furries, then. Most furries are nice people. ALL humafags are huge jerks. Environmentalists are good people who care about this planet, unlike you, Squeek.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a flamefest. I'm just interested in knowing if anyone else is doing it. I don't want to argue about its effectiveness or anything.

                Re: Earth Hour 2009!

Wanted to use the comp and TV, so I figured out the equivalent time I needed to keep the lights out to make up for it. So yes, I am currently on hour 5 of 6 with my lights out to help the earth. =)

So in order for this to work, everyone has to turn their lights off at exactly the same time?

                      Not really true. I mean:

                      - It only occurs for people in their time zone.
                      - Not everyone will do it. I imagine a very small amount will
                      - The amount of people already turning lights on and off at that time will be similar anyways.
                      - The power companies are prepared for it.
                      - Never been a problem with the end before.

So I say that is not a very good reason not to. If you have other reasons, is it one thing. But that really is not a good reason at all.

Earth Hour has already passed for me, but yeah, we took part. Having the entire residential college covered in darkness was quite interesting. Especially seeing a good 85% of us were drunk 'cos it was a Saturday evening.

                          Anyway, have fun guys.

I was describing the event, it wasn't a reason. My reason is because I'd rather be on the computer for that hour. Which ironically, I am currently doing.

EDIT: Granted, I'm doing an essay.
