    Owned...

Not that anyone cares. We've had a few piss poor seasons in a row. Collected our first wooden spoon in over 100 years of the league. Then, opening game of the season, approx. $180 of bets between myself and friends who support richmond...

Australian (rules) football, or simply known as football, footy, Aussie rules or (erroneously) as AFL, is a team sport played between two teams of 18 players with a ball in the shape of a prolate spheroid. It is a football variant played outdoors on large oval shaped grass fields (often also used as a cricket ground), with two goal posts and two behind posts at each end. " />The oval is about 150m long x 135m wide. . (some grounds are longer) The 2 arced lines at either end are the "50m" line. Adjacent goal and behind posts are 6.4 metres apart. The goal square is 9m long. 6 points for a goal, 1 point for a behind. The centre square is 45m x 45m.

The primary aim of the game is to score goals by kicking the ball between the middle two posts of the opposing goal. The winner is the team who has the higher total score at the end of the fourth quarter. Except for special circumstances, if the score is tied then a draw is declared.

Players may use any part of their body to advance the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are restrictions on how the ball can be handled, for example players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground, throwing the ball is not allowed and players must not get caught holding the ball. Unlike most similar sports, there is no offside rule and players can roam the field freely. Possession of the ball is in dispute at all times except when a free kick is paid. A distinctive feature of the game is the mark, where players anywhere on the field who catch a ball from a kick (with specific conditions), are awarded a free kick. Australian rules is a contact sport in which players can tackle using their hands or use their whole body to obstruct opponents. Dangerous physical contact (such as a pushing an opponent in the back), interference when marking and deliberately slowing the play are discouraged with free kicks, distance penalties or suspension, depending on the seriousness of the infringement. Frequent physical contests, aerial marking or "speckies", fast movement of both players and the ball and high scoring are the game's main attributes as a spectator sport.

A wooden spoon is a mock-"award" for the team that sits on the bottom of the ladder at the end of the 22 round season.

And after a little research, I've probably found a team near you. Apparently you yanks/europeans/asians have all been doing development in it over the last 5-10years. A large amount of local teams in the states by the look of it anyway.

Basically, the umpire bounces the ball in the centre of the ground. 2 massive guys(ruckmen) go running/jumping into each other to punch the ball down first. A bunch of other guys fight for it in a constant battle where your team will try to kick goals while punching and kicking a ball around to each other, knowing that there is nothing ever stopping one of the 18 opposing players smashing you into the ground. If you catch a kick, you get to either stop and take a kick from there, or keep going with it to catch your opponents off guard. A goal is only awarded if nothing intercepts the ball from the kickers foot though to past the goal line. If you hit the inner posts a behind is awarded instead of a goal, the outer posts is considered out-on-the-full and a free kick is awarded to the other team. If a goal is kicked the ball returns to the centre of the ground to be bounced into the air by the umpire, with this whole process starting over again...
