    Compress video but keep quality?

Too tired to figure out exactly where this goes.

Recently I've been doing a lot of video creation, but I just decided to try and put some on the internet, and I found out, the files are huge (1-12gb). Does anyone know of a program that can compress the video size, but keep the quality in it?
btw the files are .avi, idc what they come out as (wmv, mp4, etc.) as long as they will work with most media players.

find an flv converter if you plan on uploading to youtube etc

avi you can just reduce the fps and the audio quality and the size should shrink a bit

you can always import the video to windows movie maker and then export and choose the quality settings from there

For encoding new videos I use the program XviD4PSP. It's pretty easy to learn.

If you have a program you already like, HuffYUV is a lossless codec that you can install by unzipping that download, right-clicking the .inf file, and selecting install. Then other programs that read codecs should be able to find and use it automatically.

Re: Compress video but keep quality?

Nope. Uncompressed, original video (and audio) are, by default, lossless. Take a WAV, for example. It's lossless - it hasn't been compressed, like an MP3, OGG, etc has.

Lossless compression is the act of compressing something so that it's still lossless, but it's just smaller. Because you're still demanding full quality, you obviously can't compress as much as if you lost quality, but you can still make the file smaller (an audio equivalent of this would be FLAC, APE, etc).

Oh. He said compress video but "keep quality". That sounded like lossless to me, haha. Although I am reading more closely now.

At any rate, the first program I offered can compress in probably a billion different ways, in plenty of different file formats, so if he wants something he can upload to the web XviD4PSP will get him that.

Losing quality is what will make you able to drastically reduce size.

Your files are probably uncompressed, which is why they're taking up ridiculous amounts of space. Try a media encoder program with a couple of different settings - for instance, pick a few codecs at the highest quality, and see if you can notice the difference. You'd be surprised how much quality you can get rid of on a video without being able to tell (and you can get a HUGE quality reduction without making the video look "low quality").

Compressing a video file is going to drop the quality no matter how you slice it. You just need to find a balance where it's not obtrusive or destructive.

Good luck with that. Odds are pretty good you won't be able to come anywhere near the small file sizes you want while maintaining good quality.

A bit of a noobish option, but just throw it in Windows Movie Maker, and have it output the video as a WMV. At about 1.0Mbps bitrate and 640x480 res (or you can set it to 704x396 for widescreen), the file will still only be under 100MB on a 10-minute video.
I've done this before, and the video is still very clear, with few artifacts or noise. You can also set the HD options (720p or 1080p) if you're using the Windows Vista version, and the files will be around 300-700MB IIRC.

If you do end up putting up 720p videos (1280x720) on youtube, PM me and I'll tell you what settings to use to get the best quality. Otherwise I won't bother
