    Computer problems

So I just got today the autorun.inf virus, and fixed it.

But now I can't defragment or check my disk for errors, and I think there may be other errors but I don't have much more detail yet.

Any help on what I can, what is causing this, etc? Any help is greatly appreciated.

PS. sorry if this is in the wrong forum, not sure where else it would go.

    Re: Computer problems

    I think I have a solution.
    You can try this.

Open the command prompt (go to run and type "cmd" and Enter)
type "c:\" (assuming c is your hard drive letter) and Enter
then type "attrib autorun.inf -s -h -r" and hit Enter

    Now type "del autorun.inf"

Restart the computer and it should be fixed.

I tried those, but command prompt couldn't find autorun.inf

Logically I already got rid of autorun.inf, I'm just thinking that these other problems may be repercussions to the virus or something. Perhaps it modified something else in my registry which is why I can't defrag or do some other stuff.

I just linked this problem to the virus since I just noticed it today and got the virus today, but they may not be linked at all.

I know that....which is why I gave you that other line of code. autorun.inf is hidden unless you use the attrib code first.
You did not get rid of the corrupt file yet.

This thread and this one are examples of why we need a computer help sub-forum.

          edit: possibly even this one.

            Re: Computer problems

I already tried the other bit of text Sprite, gives me this:

I was supposing I got rid of it because beforehand my antivirus could see autorun.inf and couldn't heal it, whereas now it can not find it anymore.

EDIT - I realised I used the / dash instead of \ for C:\ but I tried it and it gives the same result anyways.

I think you have to try:

              attrib autorun.inf -s
              attrib autorun.inf -h
              attrib autorun.in -r

Not just all in one shell line.

              EDIT:

Oh lawld you typed C:/ instead of C:\...it's a backslash not a forward slash.

                Re: Computer problems

Gilly.....your problem is that you're setting the file location in C:\Documents and Settings\Owner, when it is just in C:\

That's why it cannot find the file.

fido: I tried again with the correct slash, gave the same result.

Sprite: You're probably right, iirc the location of the file is actually C:\autorun.inf so that might be why.

Care to tell me how to change it? It's always been like this as default, no idea how to change it. Looked at the different options available, didn't help.

                    Re: Computer problems

                    type cd C:\

                    cd means change directory

I just did, first time it didn't even shut down after 5 minutes so had to turn it off correctly. Second time it shut off correctly.

                          Still doesn't work. >___<
