[Hardware] A few concerns about my Computer.

I'm not a hardware maniac, and I just had a pretty bad crash. Now I've had horrible crashes before, such as 10 odd power surges in a row totally trashing my computer until I was smart enough to shut of the power bar (took forever to fix that), but this one was a video card error.

I've swapped the monitor attachment cable over to the second port (I was using the bug white one, now I've moved to the blue one).

The video card is a crap AGP 256MB video card. And with further inspection it turns out I had my mobo settings detecting a 64MB card...

Anyways, I think the video card was overheating. So I turned off all system overclocking, and took my computer apart and used a compressor to blow the **** out of it. (It's pretty damn clean).

I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what I should do to make sure it doesn't crash.

    Thanks

    Zag,

    Detailed information:
    nVidia GeForce 5500FX 256MB
    ASUS A8V (no Delux)
    AMD Athalon 3000+ 1.8GHz
    400w Power Supply

    Details of Error/Crash:
Computer seemed to turn off, but flickered back on again. Screen was all ****ed with retarded lines of bad pixles flying everywhere. After 30 seconds the computer decided to **** it, and it shut down.

I retarted the computer, and it did it again. So it wasn't a stand alone crash.

After clean the insides of the Case, disabling OC, and changing a few things around on the insides, i've managed to get it to run stably.

If you want to test for overheating, here's what you do. Reset all the settings to the way they were during the crash, take off the side panel, and blow a powerful fan (like a desk fan or something) into it. If it runs stably for a while, then more than likely it was an overheating issue. If not, then it probably wasn't.

Also, keep in mind that video errors could be the result of the monitor as well as the video card. I was getting problems and assumed it was the video card--turns out the DVI port on my monitor was faulty and was causing the issue.

What are your case temps? Check in your BIOS to see how hot some of your core components are running. If it's too hot, buy a fan. Costs as little as $3 and takes but a minute to get four screws in place. Your computer's temperature shouldn't suddenly spike and cause it to crash, unless you had just overclocked it to that point. I'm guessing you used the A8V's auto overclocking and didn't try to clock the video card higher, right?

I'd need to get a few more specifics to figure out just what the problem is.

Does your card still work with your DVI out, or will it only output using VGA?

You can download programs to check the temperature of all the components of your computer. You shouldn't really be running higher than 50C but it's ok if it goes a bit over. If that's not it sounds like your card is toast which is what I'm assuming now due to all the odd pixel formations and flickering.

Nah. The MB and CPU were absolutely fine, MB at 18C and CPU at 31C. Freezing really....

But when I checked out my video card the fan was giga-clogged with massive hunks of dust. I'm not sure if it was even moving.

I guess the DVI port just died. (I've been using it for 4 years, and I've never once plugged it into the Analog port.) So Hopefully I have another hypothetical four years of video card time (but I sure as hell hope I get a new computer long before then ;_

            Edit:
            x2 80mm Case
            x1 Video Card 50mm
            x1 80mm Power Supply
x1 fat heatsink and another fan.

So it's pretty cold in there.

Edit 2: So my dad is telling me that there was a few power surges yesterday. I never noticed, because power surges usually consist of my computer REALLY ****ing up.

Haha, yes, if the fan on your video card was not working at all, that tends to cause a problem. I recently had two single-slot 8800GT's running in SLI. Talk about a fire hazard.
