The clue is basically stating how the answer should be phrased, I think.

But I've tried phrasing it like 30 ways, along with around 5 different answers and none of them are correct...

Okay, I've entered number 5 in about 20 different ways and nothing.

I've found the answer to be -1 using 3 different calculators, including the Google one, and they all say -1. I've entered this number in numerically and I've spelled it out. Nothing. Is it wrong or something? I've also tried imaginary, using the source code, as well as nothing, zero, etc. Nothing is working. What the ****?

He means (-1)^(1/2), not -1^(1/2).

If you knew more about math you'd know what to do. If you've never learned imaginary numbers in school, I recommend you do a little research on them and how they're notated.
