    what is..?

    What is showing not telling? i'm working on an essay and the main idea throughout the essay has to be to show...not tell?

    i have this line in my essay

    Sorrow is a feeling best shared with two. At least, that was how I felt. Finding a companion to lean on was my priority

    is that showing or telling?


    (i know this is supposed to be in the literature section...but noone is checking that place =.=')

      It's hard to express sorrow without having to speak. An easy way sorrow can be shown is by crying. If someone can look at someone else and say to themself 'this person feels _______' then that emotion is shown.

      Your turn to find more examples, I think it includes many, if not most human feelings. I'd keep your essay close to feelings, and maybe even actions if you want.

          It's describing, not just simply telling. In your essay having "Tears running down" or whatevz instead "I'm sad ='("

              yea i had to do this stuff a while ago in english. pretty much a garbage concept imo but w/e

                  This is exactly it. Showing = using descriptors of the situation with lots of imagery, etc. while telling = saying what happens.

                          It is projecting ideas and feelings through images or motions or countenances that can be perceived easily and correctly by another person without presenting a formal communication through speaking.

                                  I learned about this in my creative writing class this semester. It's a lot more difficult to do than one would think.

                                              I have no idea how you can call it a garbage concept.

                                              Would you rather read:

                                              She was sad as her old mom's hand fell out of her own as she lay there dead

                                              -OR-

                                              Tears fell from Casandra's eyes as her mothers bony hand with withered skin, frailly leaves her daughters grasp.


                                              It allows for more powerful and emotional reading...allowing the writer to also be more descriptive.
