Lately I have been researching the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Though my understanding of the MBTI is not terribly deep (as of now), I understand the underlying concepts associated with it.
The purpose of this thread is not to explain the history of the MBTI. I only wish to give the average FFR user the oppurtunity to understand the fundamental theory of the MBTI. I will also be posting a link to a site where you will be able to complete a reasonably short test that will accurately establish your MBTI personality type.
Essentially, everyone falls into one of the 16 types, based on certain characteristics and personality preferences. There are 4, larger dichotomies (known as temperaments), into which 4 types are placed (based on similar characteristics).
Type Example: ENTJ
The 4 letters that make up the personality type displayed above indicate a certain characteristic. An ENTJ's 4 characteristics are: Extraverted (E), iNtuition (N), Thinking (T), Judging (J). Together, these characteristics form a single, distinct personality type.
The Attitude Characteristic:
Extraverted (E): "...draws energy from action: they tend to act, then reflect, then act further. If they are inactive, their level of energy and motivation tends to decline." (Wikipedia)
Introverted (I): "...becomes less energized as they act: they prefer to reflect, then act, then reflect again. People with Introversion preferences need time out to reflect in order to rebuild energy." (Wikipedia)
The Perceiving Function:
Sensing (S): Sees the world as concrete. Trusts experience and fact more than theory.
iNtuition (N): Sees the world as abstract. Tends to be more interested in future possibilities than current ones. Tends to trust hunches (flashes of insight).
The Judging Function:
Thinking (T): Makes a decision based on a rational, logical, and/or consistent interpretation of presented information.
Feeling (F): Makes a decision based on the specific situation, the ability to achieve harmony, and the feelings of those involved.
The Lifestyle Characteristic:
Perceiving (P): Prefers to "keep decisions open".
Judging (J): Prefers to "have matters settled".
Everyone is either Extraverted/Introverted, Sensing/iNtuition, Thinking/Feeling, and Perceiving/Judging.
