    Online Storage

I am looking for some permanent online storage to back-up, up to 300-400gb of data. Some of the files are family movies which are 25-30gb files by themselves so there can't be a size limit on individual files.

I have seen Mega uploads $200(US) deal for lifetime 250gb online storage. I like the idea of lifetime storage, a once off payment.

Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated, I don't really have too much of an idea whats out there.

Is there a reason it has to be online? If you're gonna drop so much cash on this, couldn't you achieve the same thing with an external harddrive?

Anyway, if I recall correctly, there is a way to use gmail to store freaking massive amounts of stuff, and even install it on your computer as though it's a network drive.

Online storage you can access from anywhere. External drives need to be hauled around.

        Reasons I want online storage:
        a) The files are too big for my computers HD's, so I have them solely on my External HD. If the external HD fails, which it can, I want it to be backed up.
        b) If house is burnt down/theft/whatever happens online, no matter what my online storage cant be lost.
        c) I love the idea of having my music, movie and photo collections available wherever I have access to the net. Be it at uni, in an airport in France or my friends house.

I know some of the reasons aren't needs as such but I am more then happy to throw $300-400 at it to be set up for the next 10-20 years.

I would recommend Carbonite... It's unlimited data backup with a pretty solid interface to do the uploading straight from your desktop. Requires an install though. But it monitors new files you add and uploads them for backup, then if you need to restore, you can easily do it.

          $50/year, unlimited storage.

From what I have seen, MSN is offering a bit of storage.
Definitely not as much as storage you would pay for, but it's available.

Would there happen to be any websites that offer quite a bit of storage for free?
I'm actually interested in having a lot of files uploaded somewhere as well.

That's a really good deal, but I rather carry an external hard drive just in case you are somewhere where there is no internet(The chances of that are slim, I know).

Having it all on a hard drive is still good, because sites can crash too. There are plenty of people who would want to ddos a huge online storage site.

Any site that you pay a lot of money for, and has a lot of users will almost never crash. They would probably have backup servers etc to prevent losing members. In my opinion, a hard drive is small, and easy to carry. How often does your house burn down or get robbed, and you lose all of your possessions? What happens if your membership ends, do they delete all of your stuff?

i've got 2 HDs.... both 500GB. 1 is a backup. so, hopefully they don't both fail. otherwise all my porn, music, and FFR stuff will be gone. And I've got a lot of all 3.

edit: 120GB of porn, around 35-36GB of music, and a little over 20GB of FFR related files. And close to 50GB of TV Shows / Movies.

omg tass is a sex-addicted media pirate!

But seriously though, judging from my experiences with monthly payments, I think you should definitely try to find a one-cost deal before looking at other things. That way, in case of something in the future forcing you to cut down on expenditures (coughcoughgaspricescoughcough), you don't have to worry about losing something permanently because of inability to pay for a month or two.

                        O_o, I'm glad I have 0 Gb/Mb/Kb/etc of porn...10-20 GB of music, 40-50 GB of Movies/TV shows.

I'd go with the mega-upload thing, only because it doesn't look like they're going out of business anytime soon.

This would be exactly why he's looking or a lifetime storage site. Tass just suggested one that he thought was good, but had a yearly fee to use.
