Re: New Computer - Need Input
It's only a waste on XP, but it's only worth it to get XP.. Vista still sucks.

Re: New Computer - Need Input
Here's a general idea for an Intel based comp. You can change the processor to the E8400 if you see fit because it's true that quad-core is overpowering for anything out there right now. Also, I have that exact RAM and OMFG amazing stuff. I highly recommend it.

Squeek, thank you for elaborating upon the reasons to vote for Obama. Wait a moment...(couldn't resist)
Vista is by far better than XP (except for FFR, which I know is a deciding factor for many in these forums). It's not a spectacularMARVELOUSsuperamazingJESUS upgrade, but it's definitely a big step forward.

Re: New Computer - Need Input
For some reason the RAM keeps deleting itself off of my list. I check each component against my own list in Notepad to make sure I have everything, though.
It's a good idea I saved this list, because NewEgg keeps adding and subtracting a few hundred dollars worth of stuff each time I view the list.
I decided on the 8400.
Current list:- $ 99.99 - RAIDMAX SMILODON ATX-612WBP Black SECC STEEL ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply - Retail
- $119.99 - ASUS P5N-D LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
- $149.99 - ASUS EN9600GT/HTDI/512M GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
- $194.99 - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80570E8400 - Retail
- $ 71.99 - Transcend 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model JM4GDDR2-8K - Retail
- $ 79.99(x2) - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3500630AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
- $ 19.99 - ASUS Black SATA DVD-ROM Drive Model DVD-E616A3T OEM - OEM
- $ 35.99 - ASUS 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model DRW-2014L1T - Retail
- $ 26.99 - Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE SB0570LPVP 5.1 Channels PCI Interface Low-Profile Sound Card - OEM
- $893.88 - Total
I have a great set of 5.1 speakers that I use now that I'd like to keep, just to save money on additional speakers. Uh... if there's anything else I haven't addressed, maybe mention it to me again in case I missed it.
The reason why I am personally opposed to Vista: Copy protection.
It's done. Ordered. Went with the retail mobo so I don't have to get extra cables. Should be here by Friday

Re: New Computer - Need Input
I think you'll thoroughly enjoy this computer. Pretty good parts IMO. Although I'm not a fan of any ASUS equipment purely for the fact that their layout schemes on things are just f*cked 3 ways to friday. I can't do ANYTHING with their mobos because of the way SLI sets double standard GPU's over all other PCI slots and such. I'm a Gigabyte fan because of that alone.Guardin' of the Scared Shrine

Re: New Computer - Need Input
I'm not sure if the 500W power supply will do you. I would say get in the 600W range. I'm only saying this because my friend bought one with a 500W Duel Core and high end video card and he simply didn't have enough power.Comment

Re: New Computer - Need Input
So...what are some good games that are out there for the PC? I prefer single player, but anything that's fun. I'm thinking about Doom 3 and Half Life 2 to start.
Nothing keeping me from making returns if you have some valid input.Comment
