Went to google. Only front page was black. Search and everything was still normal. Wow, that definitely saves a lot of energy! [/sarcasm]Comment

Re: Google is supporting Earth Hour.
I don't understand why a lot of you are saying that Google is only "barely" supporting Earth Hour. The fact that only the front page is black means nothing. You are not using any less energy viewing the front page of Google because your computer monitor is still on and draining more energy. The color of a website doesn't determine how much energy you are using.
The fact that Google decided to advertise Earth Hour in the first place is already heavily supporting it.
EDIT: I win: http://www.google.com/intl/en/earthhour/
~TsugomaruGoogle users in the United States will notice today that we "turned the lights out" on the Google.com homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display.Originally posted by HilulukWHEN do you think people die...?

Re: Google is supporting Earth Hour.
Sorry, what?
On CRT monitors, which the last I saw are still in use by a large percentage of the population, this amounts to attacking the weak point for massive damage. As noted, an all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts.

Re: Google is supporting Earth Hour.
I'd actually like it if they had an option that will allow you to set the Google front page to this color. While surfing the web at night, I sometimes fear hitting the home button because I would have this glaring white screen pop up.
Use of a black screen over a period of time would save bits of energy over time, but then again I have an LCD monitor and I'm not sure if a "black" background would save more energy in the first place.

Re: Google is supporting Earth Hour.
Lol. I did it, but I live in Vegas, so considering it's the city of lights, I don't think this city as a whole would get to do this... It'd be pretty kool though driving around the strip in darkness ^^ (for a meaning)Comment
