Avira Antivir Personal (free) and Comodo Firewall keep me safe online. In general, though, don't visit bad sites, and you'll be fine. Though Firefox + NoScript helps as well.

I personally use Symantec Antivirus, but I think you have to buy it.. wait a minute, ITS AFFILIATED WITH NORTON! SAVE ME! but wait.. no viruses? yay! xD

All the best Virus/Trojan remover programs, you will have to pay for, I have yet to find a good one thats free.

I have Zone Alarm and It's really good about finding Trojans and spyware but It can **** with your internet and msn, so it's kinda a toss up. I've had it for 2 years and it has saved my laptop a few times.

System restore has yet to fail me.

This is like a last resort, It fixes nearly any problem for sure.
