I swear into the Navy Friday, and will soon be in bootcamp...the only problem is, I can't run worth a ****. All my other physical reqs are there but the running. Between being a smoker, which will end in bootcamp, I'm 196 pounds...25% body fat. I was wondering if there was any tips from some of you who are runners, that would help me have the endurance to survive my 9 weeks of bootcamp.

Re: Running
start running now, don't wait until you get there.
I would say start off slow, but you're probably gonna have to run with a group or something, so that may not work.

Re: Running
Considering your time is 10 minutes per mile, you can expect improvement soon, but it isn't going to happen over night. If you practice everyday, starting by running 2-3 miles, you will be able to improve your time. From experience, you start to notice a difference in your speed every 4 weeks or so when you start running.

Re: Running
that's only 8 minute miles, which, in 9 weeks, will be very achievable if you can do 10 minute miles now.
that is, if you actually try during your runs at boot camp.

So I shouldn't worry too much as long as I keep at this consistently? I cannot afford to screw this up, this is the only way I have to support my family...everything rests on me getting through boot camp to draw my 35k a year job.Best FC: Midnight Dragon

Re: Running
well, assuming you're out of shape right now and you can run a 10 minute mile, once you get in shape you should be able to run an 8 minute mile relatively easy.
if you are in pretty good shape for yourself right now, then you might have some problems.

Re: Running
That just makes it all the more easier. If you used to run faster before, then you will more than likely get back into shape and perhaps better.

Re: Running
What?
Also, make sure you are constantly flushing your system with water. Working out builds up huge amounts of lactic acid in your system which can cause muscle cramps and just an overall sick feeling. If you're running everyday at LEAST 2 miles, you should totally be able to achieve this.Originally posted by SynthlightEveryone uses quotes from Synthlight in their signature. Re: Running
Welcome to the life of a distance runner.
To start, you need to get into shape. To start, run for 2-3 miles at your 10 minute mile pace. As long as you do not stop during your run, you should be able to reduce your mile time to about eight minutes per mile. Remember to hydrate yourself before and after your runs, otherwise you won't make it through your workouts, or they won't do anything for you. Once you are running eight minute miles, I suggest you ramp it up to 4 miles a day. Run for six days a week (take Sundays off) from the time you start training till the time you get into Boot Camp.
Also, you will most likely lose weight while doing this.
One more suggestion. Try to stop smoking now. If you stop for a while, over time, your breathing should become better and better, and that will help to lower your mile time by a very big amount.Note to self Finish.Comment

Re: Running
Smoking will bring you down a ton. I can run 2.4km (1.5 miles) in about 9:40 minutes, my most recent run, thats not an extremely good time, but you should try to be running that fast before you enter boot camp.Comment

Re: Running
Shouldn't you be more focused on actually improving your ability to run? I mean, you will be in a branch of the military. People might be shooting at you soon.Comment
