    \BOOT\BCD

Who else has ever had this file randomly go missing? I ****ing hate Vista. I can't start up my laptop. I tried installing Windows XP. It said it couldn't find the HARD DRIVE. I tried installing Windows Vista Ultimate so I could try installing Windows XP. It gets 3/4 of the way through, and says I have to restart the whole damn installation process again because it "can't restart properly." No ****, Sherlock. I try it again, no good. One more time, just for good measure. It won't even START the installation. Because there wasn't enough room on the hard drive. I looked, it said 2.3 GB available, yet, before I began the first one, over 12 gb were available. IT DIDN'T DELETE ITS ****ING FILES.

So, the question I want answered, is should I "accidentally" drop it from a really high place and send it back to them, (still under warranty), or try to fix it myself by ordering a recovery disc?

Note: I've talked to Tech Support 3 times now. The only thing that they think MIGHT work, is ordering the recovery disc.

EDIT: I remembered that my laptop is known for it's water-proof keyboard. It was tested in an issue of Popular Science with an entire bot of hot coffee with sugar and creamer in it, and all that happened was the mouse pad and mouse nub stopped working.

      It's my laptop.

Toshiba Tecra A9. Under the "High-end" section of Toshiba's notebooks. 2.4 ghz dual processor and 2 gb ram. It was so fast. I bet it'll be 10x's faster with XP.

I can't take a hammer to the HDD, but I can "accidentally" drop it. From really high up.

Also, only comes with Vista, but I have the installation disc for XP Professional. As well as Vista Ultimate. And Office Enterprise 2007.

This is what Vista is known for.

Even of you "accidently" dropped it, it would void your warranty due to abuse, any kind of physical damage is known as abuse. Only way to return it is if something broke itself.

Other thing you can do is switch with someone else who has XP and wants a Vista.

Hardware warranty might be voided by abuse, but if you got the warranty from the place you bought it, they often claim to have complete guarentees, to the point where you could take the product outside, and in full view of the clerk, smash it with a hammer, come back in and get a full refund.

How did you try to reinstall XP? Did you try to repartition or that window that comes when you put in the disc? Also if it can't find you drives then it looks like it's your mother board no the OS and Vista will probably get better with SP1 like every other MS OS.

If you can't repartition they sold you a faulty system.

Yeah, my friend made me a killdisk when I had all those viruses from, shall we say, "exploring the internet". Works like a charm. Then get your XP install disk and pat yourself on the back.

First off: What's a kill disk and how might I obtain one?
Second: 4 CONTESTS SINCE MY LAPTOP BROKE. It makes me very very angry. Only a handful of contests in the past couple of months, and this week 4. I wonder how many more I'm going to miss...

EDIT: Warranty is from the place I got it from. I opted for the best warranties they had to offer. Since I predicted that something this sucky would happen. Btw, place of purchase is something like www.toshiba.com :P Online. I'm going to look at the papers about the warranties tonight when I get home.

killdisk is a program dl it from a site that you put onto a disk/floppy/flashdrive, here there's a dl link and a better description of what it does http://www.killdisk.com/

Okay, first I'm going to order that recovery disc and try that. If that doesn't work, then I'll reivew my warranty and see what all I can do to it.

Yay for posting from multiple laptops!

My computer knowledge has degraded over the past 3 years. So whats happened? Are you able to get the loading start up? Or when you hit power, it doesn't load? If you can try and get it to open up in its basic function of DOS (I have not worked with vista, only windows 95, 2k, and xp) and search around for the file that you're missing, if you can find it, replace it into your vista system folder.
