    Waterboarding (Descretion please)

Now, I'm not exactly sure how apropriate this is to post, but for those of you who are already aware of it, what are your views on this tortureous technique?

    Here's a news link: http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/Investigat...ory?id=1322866

I think it's an absolutely rediculous idea to make a person, if I read correctly, to perform an act that portrays someone drowning just t make them confess. This has been on the news recently and I wanted to know people's thoughts.

I think it has to be the most stupid way to get a confession out of anybody. The only way they will stop drowning you is if you tell them what they want to hear, not what the truth is.

It is kind of ridiculous, but it's a lot better then REALLY drowning them. I don't think any kind of violent interrogation is necessary or right, but if it's the only way for them to confess without killing them or near-death beatings, I guess it's ok.

But after a certain amount of torture, anyone would admit to crimes they didn't do in order to get out of it. It doesn't fix the problem because if the person is truly innocent, the criminal is still out there.

As has already been stated, it's effective only when the person being interrogated is actually guilty. However, since being subjected to such techniques indicates that there was not enough substantial evidence to gain a foothold against the accused, it leaves doubt as to whether or not the person has been rightfully convicted. In the end, it's essentially an ethical gamble.

They break them down until they have nothing left but the truth.
The weight of what I say depends on how you feel.

Wrong. They break them down until they get the answer they want.

As I said before, after a certain amount of torture, the person being tortured will say anything to get out of the torture, whether or not it is true.

A, person, walking down the street, is carrying a gun and wearing a bandanna because he felt like it would be cool to carry a gun and wear a bandanna at the same time. He is arrested by the FBI and tortured by them to get information of the terrorist attack he has been accused of planning. The guy says that he was carrying a gun because he felt it would be cool, but the guy is tortured and asked to tell the truth. The guy, once again says, that he felt it would look cool. They torture him again. This cycle repeats over and over again until the guy cannot withstand anymore torture and says that he was planning a terrorist attack in order to escape the torture.

The FBI has claimed they've prevented over 11 terrorist attacks through the same method, although the person in question probably wasn't carrying a gun and wearing a bandanna like in my example, they were probably doing some odd activity. However, I don't know this nor does anyone else in the public know this because all information about these 11 prevented terrorist attacks are to be kept confidential for a very long time.
