Click the button that says 'transparent' when making a new file.

What kind of image? Could you link us an example?

If your wondering how see images as transparent, make sure you are using Firefox (not sure if the new version of IE supports the or not).

If you need to make the image background transparent yourself, you'd need to cut it out. If it's a black background, sometimes using the Lighten filter will do it for you, just make sure you have a transparent layer under it beforehand.

If you can specify a little more, I can help you better.
