Re: East vs. West Coast Rap
Yay! An actual discussion I can get into!
The difference between east coast and west coast rap nowadays has no distinction. However, back in the late 80's to 90's east coast rap and west coast rap was very different.
West coast rap represented the "gangster" side of hip-hop with songs about gangster life such as stealing, killing, running from the police, etc. Since the majority of west coast rap was rapping about California such as Compton, Watts, and other areas, it only seem to make sense to rap about it. An example of west coast rap would be "Welcome to Compton" by NWA.
East coast rap however was the exact opposite of west coast rap. While west coast rap rapped to hard beats and explicit gangster lyrics, many east coast rappers went the "bubblegum" route and rapped about things in the African American culture that did not glorify gangster rap until the likes of Notorious B.I.G. An example of east coast rap would be "Mona Lisa" by Slick Rick, in which he raps about meeting a woman named Mona Lisa in a pizza store.
In my honest opinion, I don't have a particular favorite. I love the sounds of Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Ice Cube, and others from the west but I love my boys Outkast, Nas, Jadakiss, and those from the east coast.
