    Re: Post your dream computer!

Are you trashing my laptop? Not really my dream computer, but I like it. I get 200 fps in Enemy Territory which is more textured then CS 1.6, but I cap at 76. Minimal lag, it's a good cheap laptop.

32 GB of RAM is overkill, even for an extremely advanced machine. And no motherboard as 32 slots by the way.

You don't need 32 slots. There are super-server motherboards that have 16 slots, so you could conceivably put in 16 2gb sticks. Though of course it'd be so utterly pointless that almost nobody would use such a thing.

Most of you disappoint me by showing just how little imagination you have. The idea that "more is better" is stupid. This is why the heads of corporations who screwed the country over by stealing billions of dollars have second and third houses they never even live in.

If one of you told me you'd put some of that money towards an impressive case mod, or if you did something that made your system more than an expensive silicon and plastic turd, maybe I wouldn't look down upon you so much.

"LEIK ZOMG I WANT 5,000,000,000,000,000 GOOGOLPLEXES OF YOTTABYTES OF RAM IN MY SYSTEM AND 5 MILLION PROCESSORS EACH RUNNING AT 5,000,000,000,000,000,001 TERAHERTZ LOLOLOL"

After a certain point, you end up spending over 50% more for a 10% or less increase in performance, and more often than not, one component in your computer is bottlenecking your performance anyways.

If the sky's the limit and you have infinite amounts of money, I want to hear somebody talking about investing money into a new form of hardware that will run much faster, like the fabled quantum computers. Let's hear somebody talk about other hardware, about building a studio, about what they'd use the hardware for!

That $30,000 dollars can get you an entire audio studio, or an incredible video system complete with render farm and several HD cameras and shooting equipment...

..and 32gb of ram for two quadcores??? How pathetic.

Oh, and sammo, based upon the content of the guy's post, he meant computer components, and when he posted the topic he was asking you to respond accordingly. Yes, this means you are wrong.

Grow some hair on your balls, people, and use your heads.

        Dream compy? ok.

        Let's go with:

        Core 2 Duo Extreme QX6700 2.66GHz 8MB Cache 1066MHz
at least 4GB 800MHz Low-Latency DDR2 SDRAM (really can't imagine what I'd need more for...)
        Windows XP Media Center Edition
        RAID 0 2x 1TB HD Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7,200 RPM w/ 2 x 32MB Cache
Dual CD/DVD ROM Drives - one for blazing CD/DVD R/W, other for Blu-Ray
        SLI 768MB nVidia 8800 Ultra
        Ageia PSU - 128MB GDDR3
        27" Ultrasharp Monitor
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi "XtremeGamer High Definition 7.1 Audio"
would probably need at least a kilowatt power supply

        yum.

Any computer that doesn't lag when I play FFR, and can load 10,000 StepMania songs in 10 seconds. Ah, and it has to come equipped with an ultra high-tech keyboard for maximum performance.

Actually, I already have a computer like this, but it needs a darn keyboard...

I built my self a pc, it can run ffr lag free, play latest fps games on max settings, also tried running them at same time, still nice fps. There you have it. Even if antivirus kicks in during a ffr session it wont lag anyway.

This is all done easily with measily c2d OC'ed to 3.3 1:1 Gskill ram 2gigs and a 7900GS KO eVGA card, lets nor forget the 150gig raptor ;p

                yum.

The 8800 Ultra's a piece of ****. Go with the GTX models. For the price of two Ultras SLI'd, you can easily get two GTX models and spend the other $500 on a processor upgrade.

And the QX6700 is a Core 2 Extreme, not a Core 2 Duo. Highly overclockable, and not to mention quad core. Reports of running smoothly at 3.2 ghz. The QX6800 can't do much better in overclocking, even if its factory speed is 2.93 ghz. You'll have to wait until the real QX6800 comes out if you want it, though. The current ones are limited supply and aren't any good.

What about your motherboard? That's one of your most important components.

You don't need a 1000w power supply for that. a 650 would do fine, depending upon how much you overclock.

Oh, and, you don't need a quad core for gaming kids. A Core 2 Extreme dual core processor is more than enough.

Not to mention that you can get a piece of **** pentium D and get that baby to 3.6 easy with the right cooling and run a lot of things, or if you do what I do for the lower end at the moment, go AMD, get an ASUS Crosshair, and buy a $200 AMD Athalon 5600+ dual core 2.8ghz. Highly overclockable. You can put together a kick-ass gaming rig that runs pretty fast for about $1,500, and that's including 2gb of some of the best ram in the market, a pretty good case, and some SLI'd cards. That is, unless you've got a 2560x1600 res 30 inch screen and want Oblivion's outdoor environment running at max res at 5 million frames per second without any hiccups.

Now's not the time for the high-end stuff. Intel's spending a lot of cash and research into the newer architecture, and every two years there's going to be a new line of processors, each smaller than the last. The farthest projected development I know of is in 2011. Not only that, games aren't taking advantage of Vista yet, and they certainly aren't built to support quad core processors. While quad cores have been shown to dramatically improve performance when implemented, there's no indication that most games will take full advantage of them until at least a year from now. If you're looking to build a system that will last, don't bother buying a huge amount of expensive components and getting the best on the market. The bleeding-edge QX6800 and QX6850 will come out in Q3, and you'll probably pay $1500 for the latter... and when you'll actually use it to its full potential, everybody else will be picking it up for under the $1,000 mark.

I know we're talking about dream PCs, but you have to think, to what end? A PC's only a lump of metal, silicon, and plastic arranged all pretty-like until you put it to use, so no matter what kind of plastic and metal you pick up, it won't mean a damn if it's for nothing. Make sense?

Take it this way, if you're a dream gamer, wouldn't your dream PC be that which you can put to the most use, instead of something that's better suited towards other applications? Maybe I'm going on a ridiculous tirade here, but something tells me that a system running a server motherboard with two quadcore 2.66 (or in mac's case, 3.0)ghz Xeons isn't going to mean anything to somebody who feels like playing World of Warcraft. Now, a system that has a highly overclockable processor with a great GPU and overclocking-supportive motherboard might mean just a little more. And you know what? If it costs less and has a few lower numbers, does that make it any less of a dream PC?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a system running 4 AMD processors at 3.2 Ghz overclocked, but at that point it's just a mess and the only use you'd have for it is a time-consuming high-maintenance show-off wanking machine.

my low end c2d and 7900GS runs everything at max sets with great fps. What is the point of something better for now? Just wait till they are cheap and tada. Hardware nowadays is way ahead of the software curve. You don't really need the latest and the fastest, to get the maximum performance. Gosh I even tried running, at same time FEAR, UNREAL, Defrag, loaded like 50 tabs in Fox, ran antivirus and still had avg of 45FPS in FEAR at 1440 900 native, max sets. Now, who realistically does that. Now picture yourself having a sli 8800's etc... if my measily 7900GS, a castrated 7900 btw, could do it.

Well, I think everybody's vision of a "dream PC", is the equivalent of a golden toilet. Very expensive, very beautiful, but only for unimaginative turds, and it all goes to **** anyway.

Instead of the golden toilet, go for the one that washes your ass and warms the seat while it brings you live video feed of the hot girl next door coming out of the shower nude.

Hope you all realize that for the next few years, the upper limit of computers pretty much won't change.

You can add as much crap as you want, but it won't do much. All anyone needs right now as a MAXIMUM is 2GB RAM, a nice 256MB video card, and a Core Duo. That right there will get you playing Crysis, which is, by far, the most intensive PC game ever.

ps - lights and glowy crap is the worst idea ever. A window is helpful, but blue crap will keep you up at night.

You can still get significantly more power out of a Core 2 Extreme 6800 (the dual core version), and a 512 card provides more headroom. Don't forget Oblivion's outdoor environment. That's intense, and requires one of the top cards to run smoothly at a reasonably high res. You're quite right that most of the high-end components won't be made use of, for the most part, in gaming. Only in other applications will they be of any use.

For instance, I have a Core 2 Quad 2.4 Ghz in this system, so that I can handle multitasking well given that this is a music-making workstation. The quad core architecture happens to work to my advantage (somewhat). Games only use either one or two cores at the moment, and the performance gain you'd get by spreading windows background apps out over the other two cores is questionable at best when you could just have a high-end dual core.

So, I disagree that your posted specs are the maximum, but I fully agree that getting a QX6800 and overclocking it along with two 8800 Ultras SLI'd just makes somebody a turd-face.

                                Hi.

My computer is three years old and I can run Oblivion on max.

I paid a little over a grand for it.

                                kthx.
