High School Schedules

Let me put it this way:

My school is a "magnet" school, specialized in the arts. Each focus course, or "major" class period has specific needs due to its content. In Theatre Technology and Stagecraft (my major) we build sets and set up for shows, and we need at least the 1 1/2 hours we have now for each class period.

The school board wants to change my school into a 7-period day school, shortening each period to 45 or 50 minutes each class. this would defeat the purpose of having a Magnet school if we can't do what we're supposed to with this limited amount of time.

So uh...is there a question or stance in there for us to discuss?

Do you want us to debate the original versus proposed style of schooling? Do you want us to theorize why the change is being proposed at all? Or what?

Who says you can't have classes for two periods in a row? That's what we did with AP Chemistry and AP Biology at my school.

We have Earth Science and Earth Science Lab right after each other.

They're killing the magnet system...

True, we can block schedule some classes, but... It's just not fair...

It's less of a decision that it is "better" I'll wager, and more a desire to continue to standardize the education system as much as possible.

=| im still in high school, and we have 8 periods a day with about 40 minutes per class
we arent focused on the fine arts like your school, but i am taking the fine arts track and about half of all the student in school took it too

um my school is a magnet school and we roll with 7 periods just fine. classes like AP Bio and AP Chem are double period classes, just like Guido said. they're actually going to add an 8th period next year, but they're going to tack it on to the end of the school day, and it's only for the magnet kids (there are 3 magnet programs, but if you live near the school like i do you don't have to be in one)
