I love Gibson Flying-Vs. Best guitars ever in my opinion, pretty much because most of my favorite guitarists use them. I think the sound is great on them and it sound great with a little bit of distortion.
Ibanez basses are definitely my favorite, I have an entry-level Soundgear, and I've played some nicer ones, they have a great tone. Fender basses are nice, too, I just don't like them as much. And although I haven't played one, the Jackson Death Angel Archetop just looks FREAKING AWESOME.

Cheap Ibanez guitars are terrible, even though the good ones are amazing. Schecter makes great starter level guitars, so I'd suggest spending about $350 on one of those, and get an amp with good clean sound and some distortion effects.
If you're not ready to spend more than a few hundred dollars on the guitar itself, save up. If you get a $99 Fender, you're going to regret it.
Don't bother drooling over Gibsons, they're expensive as all hell.
It depends upon what you want to play. I'd personally suggest that you get one with a flat and fast-playing neck, like the Ibanez and Jackson guitars use, instead of a Fender-type neck.
My first guitar was an Ibanez RG, about $500, and it was a really nice guitar. My amp cost another $400 or so. It was a Marshall, though I'd suggest something with a better clean tone.

Taylor 812 CE
Seagull 12-string
BC Rich Warlock
Fender Stratocaster
Epiphone Dot Special
Squier Stagemaster
Anyway, I was at the guitar store the other day and I found an incredibly godly combination. An American made Fender Telecaster through the reissued Blues DeVille. That combination sounded gorgeous. Honestly, I even plugged a $3000 PRS into that amp, and it didn't sound as good as the Tele. Pure magic.
EDIT: lol@the guy above me's tone
Seriously, dude, do something about that. And tune your guitar next time, k?
I have 8 or 9 guitars but the only one I worship is my JEM... got some good use out of my Tele and my Ibanez RG, though.
EDIT:
And dear god, BC Rich is a NONO.

You mean Satch's ORIGINAL chromeboy? Christ, I wish i did too
Seeing Satriani in concert extremely up close is one of my life's greatest experiences so far, and to be fair, I've experienced some amazing things and gone some pretty cool places (I'm well traveled).
That JEM looks kinda like a Bad Horsie JEM.. I'd like one of those, definitely, but my 777WH is just undefeatable.
..and yeah, BC Rich guitars are great for... bonfires.
EDIT: I'm a ****ing retard, that is a Bad Horsie JEM.

Why waste that kind of money on a Rich? Besides, the body makes a huge difference in tonality. Thus the reason why some guitars cost so much.
My Ibanez has a high-quality neck and alder body. If it weren't for the body, it wouldn't matter what my pickups could do.
Research it a bit; you'll find I'm right.

I'd agree with you if it was an accoustic. However, body material in an electric doesn't do **** to the tone. The wood doesn't carry the sound, like in an accoustic. It's all about the pickups picking up disturbances in the magnetic field.

You're telling me the body doesn't affect the tone?
WRONG.
You've got a bit to learn.
