    My Stuttering Problem

Ever since I could talk I stuttered and its more of an annoyance than anything. Its not really stuttering its cluttering which is where your mouth, brain, lungs, and your tounge are uncordanated when you speak. I think it has somthing to do with a part of the brain not working correctly so its really hard to combat especially during growth spurts.

On Friday I have a presention but everytime I start working on what I'm going to say I get all pissed off because I know I will stutter when I get up there. Really instead of stuttering on a syllable such as 'r' or 'h' I will stop talking or slur that sound (uncontrolably) and people look at me as if im retarted. Worst of all know that I stuttered there if I retry I will absolutly do the exact same thing again at the exact same spot. I ussualy reword the sentance or just skip an area but the fact that I have to do this everytime I'm presented in front of a class (or asking a question in class) is really fusrating. It really only happends when I stop focusing on my speech but when I'm shoved in front of another 20 teenagers I freeze up and abosolutly can't get over the mental block however hard I try. I've recived speech tharapy but its bull****.

Anyone else have somthing similar or any ideas how to combat this?

    Re: My Stuttering Problem

Well as a fellow Studdering Stanley, I can attest to your pain. Whenever I get excited, I manage to say the same thing like 3 times in a row before I can get out a full sentence. It comes on and off every few years. This year is just seem to turn on full blast for me. However, when I'm calm and collected, I talk like a smooth operator.

Just do what I do when I start to studder. I go "blahdljgljfdglj", apologize to the person I am talking to, and calm myself down to talk. If you do it correctly, it sounds like you just got tongue-twisted.

I also found Stephen King's quote for studdering helpful as well:

"He thrust his fists against the post, and still insists he sees the ghost."

Thanks, but what about during a presentation? If I randomly let out a jumble of sounds every 30 seconds it will really make me look retarted in front of my class.

During a presentation, stare at something while reading your paper or whatever. By doing this, you narrow your focus and you become more relaxed and will studder less.

I don't really stutter but I suck at presentations. Hopefully you can overcome it.

And ya - narrowing focus helps, I either stare at something, either the powerpoint screen or the paper.

Just don't be worried about it. You're worrying about stuttering, which is exactly what will cause you to stutter. It's quite ironic. I experience pretty much exactly as Chromer described, but not too often. I often think faster than I can talk when I'm excited, and then it comes out in a jumble, I notice and yell some expletive(among friends, who think it's hillarious) and then return to normal.

I know I should try not to worry but if I were to talk to myself alone under no pressure at least once a minute I would be stuck for 5 seconds the say the sentance in a diffrent way. However if I lessen my focus I might stutter less...however I can never completely overcome my desease until I stop growing but I will still have to focus more than most people on speech.

                      i don't stutter
well maybe at times when im really nervous or too hyper to properly form words
but i think most ppl are like that from time to time
but actually for me if im giving a presentation or something and i get nervous i speak with an english accent
i mean i usually only do that when talking with my little sister
                      it's quite odd
it may just be an accent, no big deal
but it's less common than stuttering i guess
just keep calm, don't get nervous, and imagine yourself saying what you want. cuz if you can imagine it it makes it easier...

                        Re: My Stuttering Problem

However in my case its a disablity. There is stuttering which everyone does when their nervous but then there are people with a disability. I'm not saying I am disabled and/or retarted but it is a higher degree of stuttering than most people have seen.

Cluttering is when your mind and body that makes you form sound arn't co-ordanated therefore my mind may want me to say the next word being 'to' but my tounge and lungs are still on 'the'. However nervousness makes this occur much more often.

I would classify myself with those who stutter as a disability but it is just something I had to learn to live with and improve.

I stutter at times and say the wrong thing every now and then, which isn't a disability on my part but rather the personality that has developed over time due to kids that have bullied me in my elementary years and stress from school and work.

I think everyone does that...the English language doesn't flow well so it may cause people disfluancies every once in a while.
