    Re: Swear Filter

I don't think we need the swear filter, really. I mean, it is a 13+ forums - one of the few 13+ forums that actually cares about the registration age. I don't see many 13 year olds being offended by harsh language.

    Just what I think.

Oh, you mean the children that aren't supposed to be here, do the stupidest move by telling their actual age to the entire forums, and then get banned in the same day?

Meh, I started watching South Park when I was six, who knows what children are doing these days.

THIS SITE ISN'T NEEDED BY THEM, THEY HAVE IPODS AND MTV FOR THAT!

Theres also a lot of swearing in the chat, vulgar, pointless swearing at that.
The majority of the chat-users have sweared at one point or another and/or they aren't fazed by it. As a chat regular, I feel that swearing is okay in chat. Nobody (at least in recent times) uses it over excessively to the point of deserving ridicule, and if anyone uses any racial slurs, they are dealt with pretty much immediately.

              Re: Swear Filter

If I remember correctly (and I'm fairly certain I do), Synth has the swear filter there so that FFR doesn't get auto-blocked by schools and other network security things. He wants everybody to come and enjoy FFR in a nice, child-safe environment. Cursing in the chat wouldn't show up on Google searches or anything like that, so it's not as big of a deal. The profile and forums, however, will show up as just text on a webpage and a filter would be appropriate. Nobody would blame FFR or Synth if a bunch of people started evading the filter with things like @ss and fvck, and it would serve to keep FFR more kid-appropriate.

As far as slowdowns, no. The way this forum's filter is (the old filter was different this way) is that it actually changes the text when you post it. Your post no longer contains whatever curse word and it's replaced with ****. The only processing happens when it's posted, and it's not a ton of work to replace a word here or there. The only time it could cause a lot of processing is if it was like the old phpbb forum filter where the curse word was still there (if you quoted or editted the post you'd see it) but it was displayed as **** or whatever when you looked at the post. That makes the filter have to do its job on every post every time it's viewed, which I'm sure takes more than the current filter that just does its job once at the time of posting.
So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

So now I'm on Twitter @NoahWright.
And I write the blog for their website.

Plus I do cool programming in-house that you'll never see. =O

Evilbutterfly, you made a very good point about the security systems. I wonder why I never thought of that.

I guess there is a good reason to have a filter after all.
My little corner of Local Reality Quotes:

Zack: Okay, I've got tampons, a Venus razor, now to stop at Victoria's secret.
Joe: Uh, I think you're taking this joke a little too far. Seriously. I can understand going off to buy a bra, but TAMPONS? You're starting to kill the joke. And do I really have to come with you?
                Zack: Shut up. It's funny.
